Is leadership and management training worth the investment?

There is a lot of information out there when it comes to leadership and management. From examples of excellence to some real horror stories.

As a business owner you are an expert in your business - you have the skills, the experience, the ambition and drive, but are you an expert at leading and managing people?

What is the difference between leadership and management?

There is a saying that employees leave managers, not jobs. It’s a slightly over used quote but is true.

A manager is exactly that – someone who manages the day-to-day operations, tasks and people in the business.

Leadership is more nurturing and supportive.

Leadership is a relationship - something you do WITH people and not TO them.

A good leader should set out to inspire people with a vision and bring them along for the journey with everyone contributing, growing and developing together.

The importance of leadership and management training

Chances are, before you started your business, you took the time to learn your trade and hone your skills over the years. Perhaps you had a leader or manager invest in you and pay for your training early on in your career?

Quite often people start businesses with specific skills, relationships and experience under their belts that they can sell to help others and the idea for a business is formed. As that business grows and they take on staff, the business owner is already stretched and desperate for that additional resource and support and it is easy to bring employees into the fold and get them straight to work.

This is where you can slip into bad management habits and not be the leader that you have the potential to be.

Investing in leadership and management training will always be worth the investment. Investing in yourself as a leader and management training for your first line managers will make your business run more efficiently and help massively with staff retention.

Leadership training will teach you the skills needed to get the best out of your people and help them to grow.

Management training will teach your managers to look at themselves first before they can manage others, understanding their own style, motivations, strengths, and areas for growth is key to getting others to follow. It also shows managers how to adapting their management style to get the best out of different people whilst remaining genuine.

It goes without saying that there is a large cross over of skills that need to learned by both leaders and managers, which is often why the two go hand in hand when it comes to training courses and programs.

Topics covered in both areas include:

o??Ability to motivate

o??Help direct reports to grow

o??Self awareness and using self-reflection tools and feedback to grow

o??Being authentic to gain employee trust - we are never the finished article and none of us are perfect

o??Listening, sharing information and delivering it in a way that the recipient understands it

o??Understanding the recipient and how they process information. Some need time to reflect, others don’t like detail and some prefer time to prepare to receive information

o??When to use different methods of communication. Sometimes verbal is much better than written but other times following up a verbal conversation with a letter or email gives clarity. Also think about choice of words, body language and giving time for questions and how to have difficult conversations

o??The art of delegating and empowering others to achieve results
