Leadership is lonely: how do you deal with INFORMATION OVERLOAD?

Leadership is lonely?

The more years of experience we accumulate (a nicer way than saying we are getting older!), the more likely we are to be moving into thought leader and more senior managerial roles.?This can make us more isolated in our problem solving and decision making.

Isolation inhibits innovation

The issue with making decisions on our own, is that it inhibits our ability to be really innovative. Isolation is even more restrictive for extroverted thinkers like myself. I think much better aloud, where I can voice my thoughts and build on ideas through interaction with others.?Extroverted thinkers (the “E” in the Myers Briggs Personality Type) draw ideas, energy, excitement, motivation and extreme breakthroughs through discussion, collaboration and workshopping with others.

Collaboration compounds creativity

Collaboration between others is at the heart of collective intelligence or CQ.?This Is a different type of intelligence from Intellectual Intelligence (IQ) and Emotional Intelligence (EQ) which are individual in nature. Collective Intelligence is generated by social interaction in a group. This compounds creativity and innovation, through synergy, or "1+1=3". Napoleon Hill called this a 3rd mind or mastermind, and is thought to be the inventor of the concept of a mastermind or peer mentoring community.

Collective intelligence is powerful for solving complex problems

As our world has become more complex, it is harder than ever to make decisions in our work, to innovate while coping with the information overload. I see the highest levels of collective intelligence when the members of a group are diverse,?yet have shared values, interests or a common purpose.?This is what I describe as a "1+1=300" effect.

This is why carefully curated, diverse mastermind groups or peer mentoring circles can be so powerful in addressing information overload. So that we can apply collective intelligence to distilling the important ideas and developing practical applications. ?

Overload and overwhelming, go hand in hand. I'm a Medium sized business owner in Regional Australia. I am almost thankful for Covid as it opened up our business world to using online webinars, and chats which in the past were a day's travel to a function center. With only myself attending due to costs but then wishing I could share the knowledge with more staff. The Challenge is after many years of having restricted access to information and now having an overload of courses etc to attend and listen to online. It's the box of chocolate options, which one first, try different avenues and then bring on board those within your organisation who will benefit. Like everything you need a team but you need to understand the dynamics and personalities of the different team members to get the most out of each person and in turn not overload them. This is where I need to find restraint as often I like too many in the chocolate box and I get disheartened when I can't get 10 projects out of the ground at any one time. So for me, I need to focus on the Gen Y in our team and let them use and find solutions to the problems and I need just to learn to steer there enthusiasm and keep it real & practical.

Part of the problem, in this increasingly data peripatetic century, is living in a state of Information Overlord, where one feels somehow compelled to not leave anything out, for fear THE solution is just one revealed fact away. The people at the mental pinnacle, such as Da Vinci, Picasso, Tesla, took an extra step and gave us a new process based on their intuition, giving us 15 minus 1 when the whole world was languishing at 7 plus 7. Clarity gives you (sometimes lonely) power and the world celebrates you and your breakthrough or sends you back to the drawing board. The very best of us clearly don't fear living on that keen, sharp edge; they relish it.
