Leadership Lessons Learned from Running a Marathon in the Rain

Leadership Lessons Learned from Running a Marathon in the Rain

As a recent marathon runner in the rain, I've gained valuable insights that are applicable to leadership in business. It takes mental toughness, determination, and adaptability to achieve a goal, particularly when faced with unexpected challenges.

I participated in a "Rainy Day – Oakland Marathon" through the streets of Oakland. Despite the weather report predicting light rain, I woke up at 4 AM to find it raining truly. My mind initially told me not to go, but my determination to run my 15th Marathon, which I had been preparing for over two months, overrode my doubts.

Lesson 1: Unexpected challenges or setbacks may arise, but it's crucial to stay focused on our goals and committed to our plans.

Arriving at the parking lot, I saw many runners who were also prepared to run the marathon despite the rain. This gave me confidence that I had made the right decision. Although I was concerned about my shoes and socks getting wet and heavy with rain throughout the run, I continued to the starting line. Just five minutes before the race started, I realized I forgot my Garmin running watch, which had been my companion for the past 14 marathons. Instead, I opted to run with my cell phone, which was heavier but allowed me to keep track of my timing.

Lesson 2: Running a marathon also requires adaptability and flexibility. Similarly, in business, we must be able to adapt to changes and be flexible in our plans in order to succeed.

There were pacers in the marathon who not only indicated our running speed but also motivated us to keep going. One of my favorites was Nick, who held a pacer board in his hand and encouraged us to keep pushing ourselves. Watching other runners push themselves, and pacers maintain the same pace and enthusiasm at mile 22 that they had at mile one, motivated me to keep going.

Lesson 3: Teamwork and motivation are crucial for success in both running a marathon and in business. Building a strong team that provides support and encouragement is crucial for success. Leaders must motivate and inspire their team to keep pushing forward, even when faced with obstacles.

At 25.5 miles, when my mind was telling me to walk, Atiq, whom I had met earlier in the day while parking, encouraged me to run the last mile with him. His words were the most motivating, which made me run through the finish line.

Lesson 4: Perseverance and resilience are essential qualities for both running a marathon and leading in business. Despite the rain and mental fatigue, I kept pushing myself to finish the race, and the same determination is required to overcome obstacles and achieve success in business.

In conclusion, running a marathon provides valuable lessons for leaders in business, such as the importance of mental toughness, adaptability, teamwork, motivation, and perseverance.
