Leadership Lessons Learned in Costa Rica With Tim Braheem and Chadd Wright

"When you have your own ship in order, people are going to want to follow you, they are energetically attracted." – Chadd Wright – Navy Seal – Ultra Runner – Entrepreneur – Legendary Badass?

Tim Braheem and his incredible coaching team have been coaching me in business and life for the last three years and the changes I’ve experienced have been nothing short of spectacular.?Over the last three years, Tim has introduced me to Joe Dispenza, Ryan Holiday, Jesse Itzler, and this week we spent two days with Chadd Wright in Costa Rica.?This was my second trip to Costa Rica with Tim and the L360 team, as always the experience was top notch and I feel compelled to share some of the lessons learned from my time with Chad Wright.?

If you don’t know Chadd Wright, I strongly suggest you check him out on the Rich Roll Podcast or search for him on YouTube.?

Chadd spoke to us about self-leadership. He taught us that leaders must first lead themselves before they can lead others.?Why would anyone want to join our team if they don’t respect and admire the life and business the leader is living??Leadership is a responsibility; our job as leaders is to strive to live a life that inspires those around us to live better lives themselves.?

Chadd goes on to explain how he breaks self-leadership down into three separate planes of existence.

  1. Physical – Leaders should test themselves physically and inspire those around them to take better care of themselves.?Chadd goes on to explain that physical challenges are not only good for us physically but mentally as well.?Being in good physical shape and overcoming physical challenges is directly correlated to greater self-confidence and personal mastery.
  2. Mental - Our mind, our will, and our emotions.??We must intentionally adapt our mindset to the challenges we face.?Requires learning, adaptation, and self-discipline.

The number one reason people quit anything is they get overwhelmed by the big picture.?Chadd advises us to focus on what we need to do to stay in the fight, break the mission or goal down into small digestible segments or actions.?Get micro-focused, instead of big-picture focused, when things get really hard and we begin to feel overwhelmed.?

This really resonates with me.?I remember setting the goal of buying 100 rental homes when I was in my early twenties.?Wow – how the heck was I going to do that??Honestly, I had no idea.?But I knew it would be a huge challenge, a lifetime goal worth striving for and worth achieving.

Guess how I got started??I turned my primary into a rental and bought a new primary to move into – huh only 99 more to go!?Then I bought one more, then another, and another, then we traded up to an 8-plex, we were on our way!?One step at a time, just making the next most logical move when the opportunity presented itself.??

Chad shared three specific tactics that have helped himself on the mental plane:

  • PATIENCE with the process and patience with yourself (mistakes are going to happen and you are going to do something stupid), it’s all part of the journey.?This also applies to being patient with our teammates.?Humans make mistakes, no one is immune.?Own them, learn from them, keep calm and carry on!??
  • STAY PRESENT and remain focused on the next step.?Focus on the immediate obstacle in front of us and overcome that before starting to worry about obstacles further in our future.?Far too often we get overwhelmed by the big picture, which leads to quitting.?How can we possibly solve all these problems??The same way you eat an elephant, one bite at a time!
  • BE DELIBERATE with our actions day to day.?Create a plan and EXECUTE, EXECUTE, EXECUTE.???Far too often, we allow ourselves to get side-tracked or drug into trivial distractions that do little, if anything, to move us forward towards accomplishing our mission.?

Boy oh boy did this land for me.?Getting clear on my mission and objectives as a leader, and getting deliberate about the daily routines and activities that will lead me to accomplishing those objectives – roger that!??????????????

3. Spiritual – Regardless of our individual religious beliefs, virtually everyone shares a common belief that there is a higher power.?Our connection to that higher power gives us a sense of unity, a sense of belonging, and hopefully a counterbalance to our ego.?Personally, I am aware the women and men who have had the greatest impact on my life had a very strong spiritual connection.?This connection gave them a set of virtues or codes to live by and helped them contrast their own personal behavior to whom they strived to be.?

So there it is, self-leadership mastery is dependent on your ability to lead yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually.?Get after it!

Where are you strongest, where are you weakest, and what do you need to focus on taking action on??I’d love to hear from you.??
