I like crows. My family found an injured crow when I was a kid and we nursed it back to health. This crow, who we dubbed “Cawky”, the bird’s sound – taught me many lessons. Here are a few….
In the ever-evolving landscape of leadership development, unconventional sources of inspiration can sometimes yield surprising insights. I was recently reminded of how Cawky had interacted with me and my family while teaching leadership skills and professional presence. The memory of that bird has inspired me to make some connections and highlighted that learning to be a better leader, no matter one’s official job title, is in the small and habitual choices one makes. And, yes, the idea of drawing parallels between learning as a leader and mimicking a crow might raise a few eyebrows; I aim to shed light on the uncanny similarities between these seemingly disparate worlds. Caw. Caw.
Let’s embark on a journey into the world of crows, unravelling the profound leadership lessons hidden within their avian world. Let’s find your inner crow through real-life applications and Cawky connections.
Adaptability: Leaders, Take Flight!
From a macro perspective of leadership, adaptability stands out as a cornerstone trait. Leaders must navigate the unpredictable currents of change, much like our feathered friends, the crows. Imagine a leader facing a sudden market shift akin to a crow navigating through changing weather patterns. The ability to adjust strategies on the fly is the mark of a true leader. Flexibility is your superpower. When faced with change, be the leader who doesn't panic but gracefully adjusts strategies—feathers or no feathers!
Real-world Application: Consider a tech company adapting to rapidly evolving industry trends. In this scenario, a leader embraces adaptability by encouraging continuous learning and fostering a culture of innovation. This leader might initiate cross-functional teams to swiftly respond to market changes, mirroring the crow's ability to navigate different environments.
Cawky Connection: Think of your company as a tech-savvy crow navigating the chaotic skies of industry trends. Embrace adaptability like a crow chasing shiny objects, encouraging a culture where innovation is as common as cawing. Initiate cross-functional teams that can pivot like a crow on a tree branch, ready for the next adventure.
Observational Learning: Watching and Learning Like a Pro
Leadership is often about learning from the experiences of others, an art mastered by our feathered friends, the crows. In the corporate workplace, leaders focussed on growth understand the value of watching fellow leaders and incorporating successful strategies into their repertoire. Take a cue from our avian friends—observe, learn, and try not to trip over your own two feet!
Real-world Application: An executive learning from a seasoned leader's negotiation techniques, observing their ability to strike strategic partnerships, and applying these insights in their negotiations demonstrates the power of observational learning. Much like the crow absorbing survival skills by observing fellow avians, leaders refine their skills by watching and adapting.
Cawky Connection: Be the executive with the observational prowess of a crow. Watch seasoned leaders like you're binge-watching your favourite sitcom. Learn negotiation strategies that you see others put into action as if you're studying stand-up routines. Take notes. Practice. Repeat. Modify. Practice more.
Communication: Caw-sing a Stir in Leadership Circles
Effective communication is the cornerstone of successful leadership. Communication doesn’t have to be formal and grand; approach every conversation as how you build your relationships. Leaders strive to inspire and guide their teams with clear and impactful messages. While we might not recommend replacing boardroom presentations with squawks, the crow's nuanced communication system offers valuable insights.
Real-world Application: A leader adept at tailoring their communication style to different audiences within the organization exhibits the finesse of a crow's caw. Just as the crow conveys different messages through varied calls, the leader navigates diverse organizational levels, ensuring that the message resonates effectively with each group. Know your audience. Learn about them. And study up on how to improve your interactions.
Cawky Connection: Be the leader who tailors communication like a crow tailors its nest—perfect for the audience. No need for squawks, but imagine conveying messages like a crow orchestra, each note hitting the right tone. Navigate organizational levels with the finesse of a crow maneuvering through a treetop obstacle course.

?Problem-Solving: Leaders, Be as Sharp as a Beak
In problem-solving, leaders often grapple with complicated challenges that demand creative solutions. Enter the crow, a true maestro of innovative thinking. From using tools to solving puzzles, these winged intellectuals are the unsung heroes of the avian world. Have you ever seen a crow tackle a puzzle? So, the next time you face a seemingly insurmountable problem, channel your inner crow—feathers optional. Use models such as root cause analyses.
?Real-world Application: Picture a project manager facing a critical issue with a tight deadline. This situation is what project managers routinely face as projects are dynamic, and the people involved are often specialized. Channelling the crow's ingenuity, the leader encourages a brainstorming session, leveraging the team's collective intelligence. Much like the crow employing tools to extract food, the team creatively applies their skills to overcome the challenge.
Cawky Connection: Next time, dear project manager, you are looking for results just like a murder of crows works together to achieve common goals, your team needs to leverage the collective intelligence of its members. Each crow in a murder plays a specific role, contributing to the group's overall success. Similarly, each team member brings unique skills and perspectives that, when combined, enhance the team's problem-solving capabilities. Like a crow using tools to get that tasty grub, use your team's creative skills to conquer challenges, no beaks required.
Interpersonal Intelligence: Flocking Together for Success
Leadership is not a solitary pursuit; it's a team sport – interpersonal and social. This lesson has been proven to me a few times over as I worked with pre-pandemic co-located teams who felt isolated and disconnected from their leader(s). And now, in our post-pandemic times, while I work with hybrid and geographically dispersed teams, they are searching for collaboration and connection with their leader(s). We seek out rapport and social connectedness – and we do so because it helps us all be more effective and productive. Here, the crow's social intelligence takes center stage. Living in close-knit family groups, forming alliances, and cooperating in tasks, crows exemplify the power of unity.
Real-world Application: A leader fostering a collaborative culture within an organization mirrors the social intelligence of a crow. Imagine a department head encouraging cross-functional collaboration, breaking down silos, and creating a supportive environment where team members feel empowered to share ideas. This leader emulates the crow's ability to forge strong alliances and achieve common goals through collective effort.
Cawky Connection: Be the leader forging alliances without needing beak-to-beak negotiations. Encourage cross-functional collaboration, break down silos like a crow breaking twigs for its nest, and create an environment where ideas flow freely, much like a murder of crows plotting world domination (in a friendly way).
