Leadership Lessons from Ted Lasso

?????I am not sure if I am the only one who judged Ted Lasso from the cover of the video box (reference Blockbuster circa 1990) and figured it was most likely about soccer.??As a Baby Boomer who grew up on American Football and other sports that dominated the major networks, soccer was not one of the sports that we saw.??Soccer games at our local schools were played on days that wouldn’t conflict with football, track and field or anything else.??For the students who played soccer, there efforts went largely unwatched.??Sadly, for many Boomers, even when soccer became more prevalent in the US, not many of us choose to watch or support teams.??So, figuring Ted Lasso was a show about soccer and the mad obsession that the younger generations have for it, I passed.

????After some praise for the show from some friends, we started watching.??Then binge watching.??I was floored.??Ted Lasso isn’t about soccer.??Coach Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) uses soccer as a vehicle to provide salient leadership lessons.??Some of the lessons are:

1.??????????Positivity and Optimism:?Ted Lasso demonstrates the power of positivity and optimism in leadership. Despite facing challenges and setbacks, he maintains a positive outlook and believes in the potential of his team. This attitude helps to foster a supportive and encouraging environment, motivating his team members to strive for their best.

2.??????????Empathy, Vulnerability, and Understanding:?Ted Lasso exemplifies empathy and understanding in his interactions with team members. He takes the time to listen and understand their individual experiences, challenges, and motivations. By showing genuine care and empathy, he builds trust and creates a sense of psychological safety within the team.

3.??????????Building Relationships and Trust:?Ted Lasso recognizes the importance of building strong relationships and trust with his team members. He invests time in getting to know them personally, understanding their strengths and weaknesses, and providing support and guidance. By fostering trust and genuine connections, he establishes a foundation for effective teamwork and collaboration.

4.??????????Adaptability and Flexibility:?Ted Lasso demonstrates adaptability and flexibility in his leadership style. He is willing to adjust his approach based on the needs and circumstances of his team. This openness to change allows him to respond effectively to challenges, make necessary adjustments, and create an environment that facilitates growth and improvement.

5.??????????Servant Leadership:?Ted Lasso embodies elements of servant leadership, focusing on the well-being and development of his team members. He prioritizes their needs, supports their personal growth, and empowers them to take ownership of their roles. By putting the needs of others first, he inspires loyalty and commitment within the team.

6.??????????Emotional Intelligence:?Ted Lasso exhibits emotional intelligence by recognizing and managing his own emotions and understanding the emotions of others. He demonstrates empathy, self-awareness, and effective communication skills, enabling him to connect with his team members on a deeper level and address conflicts or challenges with sensitivity.

Don’t let his folksy ways fool you, Ted is a leader’s leader.??Take the time to watch and learn from Ted Lasso.??Watch with your children.??We all could use a little more Ted Lasso in this world.??Great job Jason Sudiekis in your vision and portrayal of Coach Lasso.??Bravo!

Watching this with my son. There are some "adult" scenes for sure, but they are easily overwhelmed by the positive attitude and leadership the show exhibits!
