Leadership lessons from Gen Z

Leadership lessons from Gen Z

The more I work with Generation Z the more I see how they embody leadership qualities and how this next generation can revolutionize the way we lead and shape the future of our IT industry.

The emergence of Generation Z (those born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s) has brought forth a unique set of qualities that can teach valuable lessons in leadership. Gen Z's inherent characteristics of adaptability, technological proficiency, and social consciousness have significant implications in various industries, including the IT sector.

One remarkable lesson is their adeptness at embracing change. Gen Z has grown up in a world of constant technological advancements, requiring them to quickly adapt and learn new skills. In the IT sector, this ability to embrace change is exemplified by this generation.

I see a lot of them , challenge the outdated processes impeding efficiency. Instead of complaining or accepting the status quo, they take the initiative to propose innovative solutions. Through leadership, they spearheaded the implementation of new automation tools and streamlined workflows. Their keen understanding of technology and drive to improve processes showcased their ability to lead by example and catalyze positive change.

Another leadership lesson from Gen Z is their innate tech-savviness. Having grown up surrounded by digital devices and platforms, they possess an inherent advantage in navigating the technology landscape. This expertise enables them to inspire and guide teams in leveraging digital tools to drive productivity and collaboration. In the IT sector, Gen Z leaders ?effortlessly bridge the gap between traditional and emerging technologies, ensuring smooth integration and maximizing the potential of the team's capabilities.

Furthermore, Gen Z is known for its strong social consciousness and desire to make a positive impact. They value diversity, inclusivity, and sustainability. In the IT sector, this mindset is demonstrated by leaders who prioritize building diverse teams and fostering an inclusive work culture. They emphasize ethical practices, such as reducing carbon footprint through remote work and adopting eco-friendly technologies. By embracing these values, Gen Z leaders cultivate an environment that not only drives innovation but also contributes to a better society.

As per the Deloitte Global 2023 Gen Z and Millennial Survey - Nearly four in 10 (44% of Gen Zs/37% of millennials) say they have rejected assignments due to ethical concerns, while 39%/34% have turned down employers that do not align with their values.?

In conclusion, the leadership lessons we can learn from Gen Z in the IT sector are invaluable. Their adaptability, technological proficiency, and social consciousness make them natural leaders who drive change, leverage technology, and prioritize ethical practices. By embracing these lessons, we can create a more dynamic, inclusive, and sustainable work environment.
