Leadership lessons from a diamond junior
The following are my 'top ten' leadership lessons from my period as MD of African Diamonds plc, specifically focused around the AK6 deposit, now Karowe Mine. These were shared with emerging leaders across the African continent on the final day of a six month Common Purpose Africa Venture programme. The actual content of my presentation and the ensuing discussion was/is subject to Chatham House rules.
Here are the top ten learnings:
a.?????Have a crystal-clear and crisp strategy and understanding of the value drivers whilst being opportunistic at the same time.
b.?????Do not be afraid to try new technological approaches.?
c.??????Be acutely aware of the ecosystem you work, being political, economic, corporate.
d.?????Learn the lessons of history: try and understand the corporate and political context behind why historical decisions were made.
e.?????Be intensely curious.?This is a rare trait in my view.
f.???????Cultivate and build strong and resilient networks. Actively manage your social media, you are a brand.
g.?????Build a supportive high-performing team based on culture, skills and competency.?Weed out those who don’t fit the culture and don’t perform.?
h.?????Be an inveterate electronic filer.
i.???????And although not part of this particular story, but very important, give back to society.?“There by the grace of God go I … “
j.???????And … back yourself.
