On June 19, 2023, I embarked on a transformative journey with the Global Leaders’ Common Purpose program in the vibrant city of Mumbai, India.?
I had little notion that the experience would leave an indelible mark on my understanding of leadership and entrepreneurship, likely to inform how I work, lead and serve others. I joined a distinguished group of global participants ranging from CEOs of private companies to leaders from the not-for-profit sectors, to explore the complex challenge of shaping the future workforce. Together, we travelled to organisations across the City; Mumbai, with its extremes and dreams, became a captivating backdrop that unravelled the multifaceted dynamics of leadership in the face of our wicked problem: What will it take to shape the workforce of the future?
Towards the end of our journey in Mumbai, we were asked to describe how the experience had made us feel by using five singular words. The words that we chose were: impressed; challenged; optimistic; inspired; energised. ?
Impressed because: Mumbai’s leaders demonstrated unwavering dedication and resilience in the face of adversity. Through their stories of overcoming obstacles, I learned that setbacks are not roadblocks but stepping-stones toward achieving greater goals.?
Challenged because: The stark contrast between the rich and the poor, the fast-paced yet westernised lifestyle and the sheer determination to make dreams come true challenged us to delve into the leadership qualities required to drive change in a complex environment.?
Optimistic because: Every Mumbai leader,Tregardless of their sector, showcased a commitment to their core purpose. Those in for profit organisations, demonstrated how financial success can be balanced with a higher mission, creating a sense of purpose that motivates employees and aligns with the aspirations of the community.?
Inspired because:?This experience affirmed my belief that true leadership extends beyond authority and management. It arises from inspiration, as leaders ignite passion and vision in their teams. Witnessing the unwavering commitment and perseverance of Mumbai’s leaders, I realised that being inspirational is a form of leadership in itself.?

Energised because: Mumbai illuminated the importance of considering the needs and aspirations of the NOW generation – the workforce of today. By embracing their perspectives, organisations can foster innovation, adaptability and a thriving work culture that resonates with the present moment.
The lessons that I learned in this remarkable city will forever shape my approach to leadership; it is a city of challenges but indeed a City of Dreams, a place where leadership is tested, purpose is discovered and innovation thrives.?
