As a Master Certified Coach, I've had the privilege of working with numerous CXOs and leaders, guiding them on their journeys of executive and leadership development. Over the years, I've witnessed firsthand the transformational impact of effective leadership practices. But, sometimes, the most profound lessons in leadership can come from the unlikeliest of sources—like the heartwarming story of my daughter.
My daughter, a 1st grader, recently taught me a lesson in leadership that I'll never forget. She often comes home from school with a candy or chocolate bar, her eyes shining with joy. Her secret? She receives these treats for excelling in tests or reciting poems. Her happiness is not just contagious; it's a powerful reminder of what true leadership is all about.
In a world where success is often measured by individual accomplishments, my daughter taught me an invaluable lesson about leadership: the true essence of leadership lies in making others win. Her story is a beautiful reminder that leadership is not about hoarding the chocolates of success but about distributing them generously to those around you.
One day, my daughter came home with a different kind of excitement. She announced that next week she would be distributing chocolates to her classmates who excelled in reciting poems. I asked her why she wasn't participating herself, and her response left me both surprised and inspired.
"My teacher says I know the poems well, and now it's my turn to support and cheer for others," she explained with a smile.
For a moment, I thought she might be disappointed, but to my amazement, she was thrilled. She eagerly looked forward to the upcoming contest, where she would be cheering on her classmates. Throughout that week, she selflessly supported five of her peers in perfecting their recitations.
On the day of the contest, three of her classmates emerged victorious, and all three had been supported by her. She returned home without a single chocolate bar in hand, but her heart was full of happiness and pride.
She shared her joy with everyone—teachers, parents, and fellow students. In the corridors of the school, she spoke of how elated she was because her classmates had won. She radiated happiness as she explained how she had given away chocolate bars to those who had succeeded.
This heartwarming experience taught me a profound lesson in leadership:
Selflessness and Empathy: Effective leaders prioritize the needs and aspirations of their team members. My daughter's act of supporting her classmates, without expecting anything in return, demonstrates selflessness and empathy—the foundation of great leadership.

Mentoring and Coaching: Just as my daughter helped her classmates succeed, leaders should take on the role of mentors and coaches, guiding their team members to reach their full potential.
Celebrating Others' Success: True leaders find joy in the accomplishments of their team. Celebrating others' victories creates a positive and motivating environment that drives sustained success.
Building Relationships: Building strong relationships with team members is paramount. My daughter's actions likely strengthened her bonds with her classmates, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie.
Servant Leadership: The concept of servant leadership, where leaders serve and support their teams, aligns perfectly with my daughter's actions. Leaders who put their team's needs first often reap the benefits of a highly motivated and loyal workforce.
Long-term Vision: Leadership isn't about quick wins; it's about creating an environment where everyone can thrive in the long run. My daughter's support contributed to the growth and confidence of her classmates over time.
Happiness and Fulfillment: Ultimately, leadership should be fulfilling, not just for the leader but also for those they lead. My daughter's joy in helping her classmates embodies this principle.
Leadership, in its purest form, is about empowering others, nurturing their potential, and creating an ecosystem where everyone can shine. It's about guiding, mentoring, and cheering for your team, even when you're not the one receiving the accolades.
As leaders, let us remember the lessons from a child's heart—a heart filled with happiness and pride because others succeeded. Let us strive to be the kind of leaders who, like my daughter, find the greatest joy in distributing chocolates, in making others win, and in celebrating the achievements of those we have the privilege to lead.
