Leadership Lessons with the Champions

Leadership Lessons with the Champions

The 2024 Olympic Games this year were a vibrant celebration of human spirit and potential. For me, they went beyond brilliant displays of talent and sportsmanship, they left me with nuanced revelations and lessons.??

When talking about leadership lessons, I often refer back to the Barrett Model – the Seven Levels Model – which perfectly encapsulates the seven most important areas of human motivation, needs and impact. This model not only reflects our innate desire for self-actualization but also serves as a beacon, illuminating the path to a life of fulfilment and contribution.

  1. Novak Djokovic – Cultivating Communities & Living Purpose

Novak Djokovic’s illustrious career and efforts go beyond the tennis court, paving the way for many. He is a living example of Winston Churchill’s adage, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”?

??Perfectly embodying Levels 6 and 7 – Collaboration and Contribution, he symbolises the spirit of collective well-being, where the measure of success is not just in the achievements we attain but in the lives we uplift. The legacy of selflessness, as exemplified by Novak, underscores the profound truth that our greatest contributions lie in our service to others and the environment. It is a commitment that transcends the present, nurturing future generations with a vision of social responsibility and a long-term perspective. This ethos of service is the cornerstone of true leadership, fostering a sustainable future for all.?

2. Imane Khelifi – Courageously Evolving & Authentic Expression

Imane Khelifi's journey to the 2024 Olympics is a story of profound hope. Facing immense hardships, she emerged as a beacon of resilience and determination. Her ability to find light in the darkest of days and maintain her focus through life's sunshine and shadows is a testament to unwavering leadership.?

??Contributing from Levels 4 and 5 – Evolution and Alignment, Imane demonstrates a leadership that not only adapts but thrives, ensuring alignment with our deepest values and the broader vision of progress for all. True leaders foster a culture of accountability, transformation, and continuous learning, empowering individuals with autonomy and the ability to enact change. This evolution aligns with a shared vision, where meaning is found in collective values of openness, integrity, passion, and honesty.

3. Arshad Nadeem – Achieving Excellence & Courageously Evolving

Arshad Nadeem’s Olympic journey underscores that effective leadership lies in embracing constraints, promoting resourcefulness, and channeling what little we have into something extraordinary.

??Operating from Levels 3 and 4 – Peformance and Evolution, Arshad's story is a compelling reminder that greatness can stem from simplicity and gratitude. His dedication and discipline, despite scarce resources, exemplify the performance aspect of Barrett's model, focusing on excellence, quality, and results. Moreover, his journey highlights evolution, promoting adaptability, continuous learning, and innovation — key traits for transformative leadership.?

4. State of Palestine Team Participation – Ensuring Stability & Building Relationships

Besides being a human-centric fresh breathe of air, the participation of Palestine in the 2024 Olympics is a powerful symbol of hope and identity. Their journey reminds us o f René Descartes's philosophy, "I think, therefore I am." Their presence signifies resilience and the unyielding spirit of their people.

??Conducting through Levels 1 and 2 – Viability and Relationships, the humbling participation sheds a light on how a team's experience reinforces the importance of self-awareness in leadership. Recognizing and owning our identity shapes our reality and fuels our resilience. This understanding is vital for viability, ensuring we meet basic needs like stability, safety, and health. It also strengthens relationships, fostering respect, trust, and open communication—key elements for a cohesive and effective team.

Dear Ali F. Hamdan - ??? ???? ????? beautiful how you bring the essence of the guiding model together with shining living examples. It is the values we embody and bring to life that make the difference. By referring back to my own values, I often find just that extra bit of strength and clarity to make the next aligned step in the face of challenge or unknown territory. I am convinced champions from all walks of life will find some common ground and inspiration in what you are sharing.
