Leadership Learnings

Jacinda Ardern was swept to the government in 2017 on a wave of public excitement nicknamed 'Jacindamania'. She ascended from the deputy leader of the opposition to New Zealand's highest office in less than three months. Her win appeared to be heroic. Few in politics would have believed it was possible; even fewer would have predicted her courage and compassionate leadership, which gained her international praise in the aftermath of the devastating Christchurch mosque killings in March 2019. Her bold management of the COVID-19 epidemic has elevated her global status to the point that she is now regarded as a model leader. Despite winning a historic landslide victory in 2020, she opted to rule in collaboration with the Green Party. She is known for her strong leadership style, characterized by the following attributes:

  1. Empathy: Ardern is known for her ability to connect with people and to show genuine care and concern for their well-being.
  2. Authenticity: Ardern is often praised for her authenticity and sincerity, which has helped to build trust with the public.

  5. Visionary: Ardern has a clear and bold vision for New Zealand, and her leadership is characterized by a focus on the long-term outcomes she wants to achieve.
  6. Inclusiveness: Ardern is committed to creating a more inclusive society and her leadership style is characterized by a focus on collaboration and teamwork.
