The Leadership Leap Into The Unknown…

Last week I asked you what was holding you back from getting your first board seat?

Whilst I got a huge number of responses, the clear winner was ‘I don’t know what my first step should be’.??

Which is great, I can do some more content around that, so thank you.? However, make sure you’re not using a perceived lack of information as a form of procrastination.? The first step is talking to a small business owner.? The reason most people won’t do this is they are worried about rejection.? They want certainty on how the conversation is going to go before the conversation happens.? But life doesn’t work like that.? Part of being a leader is pushing yourself into situations you’re not familiar with and learning how to handle them.??

There is no win or lose, you’re just having a conversation.? Do you have a board of advisors?? Have you thought about having one?? Would you be interested in having one?? Why not?? If I could pull together some great people, would you be interested in connecting with them?

No promises, no selling anything you can’t deliver, just start having conversations with business owners and learning about their challenges.? Doesn’t need to be any harder than that.

It's critical for prospective board members to understand their areas of expertise and the kinds of boards they would like to join. Assign two or three "hooks" to help the recruiter remember you. That's the most effective way for a recruiter to learn about your interests and capabilities as well as how to best display your profile to a possible match.
