Leadership

There have been so many articles and books written on Leadership, there are hundreds if not thousands of different trainings you can take to become the best leader you can be, so what can I write that hasn’t already been written and that could help you to be a better leader!!

Well I can tell you what leadership means for me, from my point of view of having been a manager and a leader, and now as a coach and seeing leaders from the coaching side.

My 6 Insights:

1)   First and foremost, good listening skills, if you can’t listen to what others are saying than you can’t lead. You don’t know it all, so listening to your teams is paramount.

2)   Good observation skills, to know when people are really telling you what they think and when they say “yes, everything is going good”, knowing if it really is.

3)   Coaching skills, asking them powerful questions to get the best out of them, so as to help you to continually improve the business.

4)   Patience. If you can’t keep your cool and respond in times stress and crisis (instead of reacting off-the-cuff) then you can be sure you will start to upset your team and start to cause an environment based on angst.

5)   A sense of humour, we spend so much time at work, so creating a warm, friendly environment where people can have a laugh is so important.

6)   Understanding on how important personal development is for your team, and making sure that you budget it and defend it.

You are not building a business, you are building people and they are building your business with you, to do that they have to be happy and want to stay; and to do that they need to have skills, feel that they are valued and are recognised!

Great to see 'listening' at the top of your list, Karen - couldn't agree more!
