“It’s one of the great conundrums of our lives,” says Lindy McClymont, Head of Faculty at The LLC Academy. “How do we become good at leadership? How can we be more effective in leading ourselves, and others, in ways that lead to solutions that are greater than the sum of their parts? And how do we remain relevant, flexible leaders that can adapt to situations as they change and develop?”?

“If we stop for five seconds and genuinely think about it, the answer is painfully simple,” says McClymont. “We don’t wake up one day and realise that we have become a leader and get to rest on our laurels. Becoming a leader requires consistent effort over time. Becoming a leader is not an end goal. Rather, it is an ongoing journey, one that is challenging, unnerving, and oh so necessary.”?

“To make things even more complex, it is not sufficient to be only one kind of leader,” says McClymont. “Rather, we as leaders need to be agile and infinitely adaptable. Today, we may need front and be directive. Tomorrow, our team to react immediately to a situation, which will require us to be the kind of leader who leads from the back, who is collaborative, who makes every person involved in the discussion feel heard and as if they have made a personal difference.”?

“If this sounds far too complicated, as if it requires too much, just think of it this way,” says McClymont. “At its very core, leadership is problem solving and relationships. This is why it is imperative that leaders are responsive, rather than reactive. By being able to adapt your management and leadership style according to the situation and the needs of each person you lead, you can ensure that you can solve problems effectively - as and when they arise – with relationships intact.”?
