Leadership: A Journey of Growth and Refinement

I believe every person is born with leadership traits and qualities. Some may have a natural abundance, while others start with less. But leadership isn’t just about what you’re born with—it’s about what you do with it.

When individuals practice, train, and refine their leadership skills, they grow stronger and more capable, eventually becoming great leaders. On the flip side, if they neglect those abilities, the skills diminish. They may end up in leadership positions without the foundation to lead effectively, causing challenges for the entire team or organization.

True leaders must remain vigilant for these scenarios. It’s our responsibility to protect those around us from individuals who lack preparation but hold authority, especially in high-stakes careers like small business ownership, public safety, or the military fields where leadership can mean the difference between success and disaster.

I see the roots of leadership every day in my 2-year-old. Her instinct to help others avoid danger or missteps is already showing. She’s learning through our guidance, but she’s also choosing to lead in her own way. It reminds me of my childhood when my parents pointed out similar qualities in me. My leadership abilities truly developed through scouting, the military, and the fire service. These environments tested me under pressure, sharpening those innate skills into something greater.

Leadership isn’t a one-time accomplishment it’s an ongoing journey. It begins in childhood and evolves through life’s challenges. It’s often uncomfortable and full of moments that push you to your limits.

But the beauty of leadership is this: a great leader sees the potential in others and helps them draw it out. That’s how real leaders are made not born, but nurtured
