The Leadership Journey: Charting Your Course

The Leadership Journey: Charting Your Course

Last Friday, I graduated from a leadership development course through the University of the Witwatersrand Business School. My eureka moment in this journey is best summed up in the following words delivered by Lincoln Mali (a seasoned and inspirational leader in his own right) as part of his keynote address to the graduating class: “some people who are referred to as leaders are, in fact, not leaders… they are merely occupying leadership positions”.

As I reflected on this perspective and the course content, I remembered the age-old nature versus nurture debate… whether leaders are BORN or MADE? The conclusion I reached was that even natural leadership talent becomes obsolete if not harnessed or finessed. Thus, leadership development is a crucial aspect of blazing a successful leadership path.

Leaders have the power to shape an organization's future and impact the lives of colleagues. But how do you blaze a leadership path that's uniquely your own? Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Define your vision: A clear vision is critical to any successful leadership journey. Take the time to define your goals, values, and purpose. What kind of leader do you want to be, and what impact do you want to make on your organization?
  • Build your skills: Great leaders never stop learning. Whether through formal education, professional development, or mentorship, continually expanding your skillset is essential to staying ahead of the curve.
  • Cultivate relationships: Leadership is a team sport. Build strong relationships with your colleagues, peers, and mentors. Seek out diverse perspectives and be open to feedback. Remember that your success is intertwined with the success of those around you.
  • Embrace failure: Failure is an inevitable part of any leadership journey. Rather than dwelling on your mistakes, use them as learning opportunities. Embrace a growth mindset and use your experiences to become a stronger, more resilient leader.
  • Take action: Finally, the most important step in blazing a leadership path is taking action. Don't wait for opportunities to come to you – create them. Be proactive, take risks, and make bold moves that align with your vision and values.

Keep learning, growing, and developing, and you'll be well on your way to charting your own successful leadership course. Remember, leadership is a journey, not a destination. Embrace the challenges and stay true to your vision. The world needs more passionate, purpose-driven leaders like you.
