Leadership and Its Impact: A Tale of Resilience and Sacrifice

Leadership and Its Impact: A Tale of Resilience and Sacrifice

As we, the Form II students at Kakuma Refugee Secondary School in 1998, prepared for the holidays after completing our term 2 examinations, we faced a crucial dilemma. We received the news that only the Form 3 students could take their textbooks home, allowing them to study and revise what they had learned during the previous term over the holidays. However, those of us in Forms I & II were required to turn in our textbooks to the school administration (these textbooks were provided by the UN - I believe this was LWF).

Upon hearing this news, all the Form 2 students gathered, discussed the matter, and nominated a delegation that included Peter Bul Deng, Abraham Kuany Anyieth, [Johnson] Alier Reng, and Dhieu Deng Leek to present their concerns to the school administration. The delegation met with the headmaster (Godfrey), his deputy (Sam Anyona, now believed to be in Canada), and all the teachers.

Unfortunately, during their efforts to negotiate with the school administration, a small group of students secretly reported the delegation to the school administration. These students sought favor from the teachers and administrators, betraying the trust of their peers and the panel striving to secure their rights.

Despite their genuine intentions and best efforts, the delegation was unfairly labeled as the ringleaders of a perceived rebellion. When term 3 began, the school administration gathered the students in the Science Lab, dividing them into groups based on their perceived involvement. The students who reported the delegation were praised as the "best students" and rewarded, while the delegation was unjustly subjected to harsh penalties, including suspension for one month.

Amidst these trials, the true strength of leadership was demonstrated. Despite facing adversity and unfair treatment, the delegation remained resilient and focused on their studies. Their dedication and hard work shone through as term 3 progressed, and they excelled in their examinations, advancing to Form III despite the challenges they endured. Most importantly, their brave action set a precedent, and from that point onward, all students were allowed to take their textbooks home over the holidays without penalty.

This reflection serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences that leadership can entail. Even with the best intentions and genuine dedication to helping others, leaders may face betrayal, obstacles, and unfair judgment. Yet, authentic leadership lies in the unwavering commitment to doing what is right, even in the face of adversity. The delegation's actions showcase the importance of standing up for others and sacrificing one's comfort for the greater good.

In conclusion, the story of the Form II students at Kakuma Refugee Secondary School in 1998 highlights the significance of leadership and its consequences. It emphasizes the resilience and determination required to lead with integrity, even in challenging circumstances. Moreover, it serves as an inspiration for all, reminding us of the importance of advocating for others and working toward a better future for everyone.

This is a great story with invaluable lesson that leadership require sacrifice for the greater good.
