A few years ago I was honored to meet Steve Forbes, Editor in Chief of Forbes Media, for a two-hour lunch in New York City. During our meeting, Steve openly discussed his family life, positive influences, leadership, team dynamics, technology, money, the current political climate, his two presidential runs, and what he does for fun. Trust me, I was soaking in all the knowledge I could!
Throughout our highly interactive talk, I openly discussed my family, faith, international philanthropy work, keynote speaking, Inside Out Leadership philosophy, Lead the Way, aspects of All In, and what he thinks about the millennial generation.
One of the most intriguing parts of our conversation was when I asked, “What key attribute gives way to great team dynamics?”
Steve responded, “Diversity of thought is invaluable. You need people that think differently in order for the team to maximize its effectiveness.”
Two central qualities that stood out about Steve were his genuine humility and courageous spirit. In the end, a new friendship was born, and we each left feeling inspired about life and leadership.
Instead of conflict, you have complement.
It seems much easier to surround yourself with mini-mes, but then how would you grow? Where would the adventure be? If we want to excel in being our full selves, growing, enhancing, and seeing movement and momentum in our businesses and on our teams, it requires a diverse team.
You have one body, many parts. Some people are going to be the feet. Some people are going to be the ears. Some people might take a bit more initiative in the mind. Regardless, all parts are necessary.?

Teams not only need a conceptual appreciation and embracing of diversity, but an experiential one.
Again, because we’re naturally driven to associate with similar people, teams must take deliberate action to maximize diversity.
Living a purposeful life of diversity helps us appreciate the differences in our team members. It's realizing the value they have. Now that’s team dynamics for a dynamic team!
