The Leadership Insider #5 - Leadership and Teamwork

The Leadership Insider #5 - Leadership and Teamwork

Leadership and teamwork require more than just feedback, instructions, and team-building activities. Effective leadership means that you not only guide your team in the right direction but also pay attention to the team's dynamics.

The leader's ability to build and empower their team directly impacts the organization.

Great leaders understand that the secret is not about seeking out individual greatness to make yourself look good for you to impact your team. Instead, it is about building up the people around you. How can leaders do that? By trusting, empowering, and enabling them to contribute with their skills, the team becomes a powerful source of the best of each one’s abilities.

Countless statistics show the importance of teamwork and collaboration not only to increase the team's morale but also to increase productivity. According to research , about 75% of employers rate teamwork and collaboration as "very important," yet only 18% of employees get communication evaluations in their performance reviews.

Teamwork is the ability to work together to execute the business strategy. Collaborative environments are at the core of the modern workplace. When teams can collaborate, they can take advantage of the strengths and skills of everyone involved.

54% of employees say a powerful sense of community (great coworkers, celebrating milestones, a shared mission) kept them at a company longer than was in their best interest. However, 39% of surveyed employees believe that people in their own organization do not collaborate enough.

Benefits of Collaboration in the Workplace

Leadership and teamwork directly impact the ability of an organization to carry out its mission. You need leadership to make sure everyone on your team is going in the same direction and working towards the same goal.

But the benefits of work collaboration have a broader impact.

  • It increases productivity.
  • It helps workers to feel happier with their work and organization.
  • It increases the chances for employees' future success.
  • It increases profitability.
  • It helps to distribute the workload, decreasing stress in the team.

Statistics have also shown that 13.9% of workers define good team collaboration as being able to communicate easily with their colleagues. That is why influential leaders must pay attention to their teams and the individuals who are part of that team. The same research has shown that employees whose boss acts on their feedback are 4x more likely to remain in the company.

The New Work Model and the Challenge for Leaders

There is no denying that after Covid-19, leaders all around the world had to learn how to manage their teams remotely as many organizations had to move to a work-from-home model suddenly. Collaboration has become more complex, but success still depends on the fundamentals.

Over two years have passed since the beginning of the pandemic, and most leaders and organizations have figured out what best works for them. And not by surprise, countless organizations and employees have decided to adopt a remote or hybrid model for the future, not bringing back the full in-person work model as it was before.

Studies have shown that connected workplaces reduce office space with savings of up to 40% on a corporate real estate lease. Also, millennials' collaboration statistics reveal that over 60% of Generation X and Millennials would collaborate more through visual means.

Practical Actions to Build Teamwork and Collaboration

But what does that look like in practice? What kind of actions can you take every day to help your team succeed? I want to remind you that there is no secret formula, right or wrong. Each organization is different, and each team requires a certain number of different skills from its leaders. Finding the balance is the key to success.

  • Foster open and honest communication
  • Create collaborative goals
  • Celebrate their success
  • Allow the team members to solve problems
  • Empower the team with sources and training
  • Hold yourself accountable
  • Show empathy
  • Encourage and build one-on-one relationships
  • Build respect
  • Engage with the team
  • Take responsibility and work together with your team

One-on-One with Coach Eric Bailey

It is time to coach one-on-one. It is time to answer some of the most asked questions from team leaders, managers, and CEOs during my coaching sessions. Some of these questions may sound obvious, but you might be surprised how knowledge and self-reflection can help you to improve your leadership game.

I want to share some of my experience, knowledge, and thoughts with you.

1.????What is one effective way to track the employee’s perceptions throughout the change?

Changes come and go in the workplace. Some have minimal impact on the team, and some may cause considerable discomfort for some individuals or the entire organization.

As a leader, you must be aware and pay attention to the signs that future changes may impact your team or one individual. Communication is critical to lower the impact of change (that is inevitable most of the time). However, communication is only the first step. The strategy and follow-up that comes after will help you understand if the message was fully comprehended.

Here are some simple questions you can ask your team:

  • What, in your view, are the most critical points we just covered?
  • What didn't you understand?
  • How do you feel about it?
  • What else do you need to know?
  • What are your expectations for the near future?
  • How do you think this change will impact the team?

2.????How can I better recognize when a teammate is struggling?

Not every person in your team reacts the same to changes in the work environment and also to events that may be happening in their personal life that could impact their work and productivity.

It may not be easy to recognize when someone is struggling, and leaders must always pay attention to signs that one teammate may be struggling. You can ask yourself some questions to better understand.

  • Is your employee failing to produce results?
  • Does your employee make a lot of mistakes?
  • Do they take more of your time?
  • Do they need a lot of supervision?

Take the time to give your attention, build a relationship with your employees, listen, and talk. One of the best things a leader can do is to openly admit some of their own challenges – it normalizes the team's experiences, helping to build an environment of trust.

Remember: the true mark of a resilient team is when team members proactively support one another.
