Leadership: innate or acquired/learned?
Geneviève Fougère, MCC, ACTC
Ma?tre Coach de l'ICF, Directrice Associée Cabinet DG-Consulting, Cabinet spécialisé dans l'accompagnement sur-mesure des directions générales.
In my practice as an MCC coach, I've often been confronted with this fundamental question : is Leadership something you're born with, or can it be developped over time? ??
My deepest conviction, forged over the years, is that Leadership is a subtle blend of innate and acquired.
Yes, there are behaviors that may seem natural to some individuals, and at the same time, Leadership blooms through a constant commitment to one's own attention and development.
Imagine a gardener cultivating a beautiful plant.
He provides daily care : fertilizers, light and daily water.
In the same way, Leaders nurture their skills, vision, ability to connect and empathy in order to enable their Leadership flourish. ????
So what are the key ingredients in this process?
? Active listening,
? Authentic communication,
? Ability to inspire, motivate and trust others.
And like any skill, leadership requires practice, feedback and constant adjustments.
A case in point?
Look at the career paths of some of the world's greatest leaders.
Their Leadership has been shaped and refined over the years, often through crises, failures, and achievements. ????
As an MCC certified coach, my role is to support Leaders on this exciting journey towards authentic, human and inspiring Leadership.
Together, we use questioning to develop and cultivate the skills, vision, as well as resilience, much needed to meet the challenges of their circumstances. ???
So, what do you think ? Is leadership innate, learned, or a combination of both? I'm curious to hear your thoughts in the comments ! ??

Mind over Meaning and System
3 个月I believe that the question of what qualities and abilities a leader should have, and to what extent they are innate or can be acquired, is too narrow. I would like to invite you to look at leadership as a situational triangle consisting of leadership qualities/skills, the will to lead, and the acceptance of those being led. There are people who do not necessarily want to lead, but are very good at it when asked. There are people who are easily accepted as leaders when their leadership should be questioned. Not all of the qualities we think of as leadership are actually qualities of a leader. Some are skills that are needed for a goal, a task, a situation, and the question is who decides which person best brings those skills to the table. Those who are led are always co-responsible, whether they want to be or not.
