The Challenge + Imperative for Leaders in the Age of AI
In the modern era, where artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into business operations, leaders face a multifaceted challenge: how to leverage advanced technologies while evolving their strategic roles. As AI becomes a crucial component of business models, leaders must adapt their approaches to harness its full potential and drive sustainable growth. This dynamic underscores the necessity for leaders to not only embrace technological advancements but also to rethink and transform their leadership styles.
In exploring this theme, the research paper "Leaders Look to Embrace AI and High Growth Companies Are Seeing the Benefit" by Esat Dedezade provides valuable insights. Collaborating with AI analyst Susan Etlinger and Professor Heike Bruch, Dedezade surveyed 800 leaders across Europe and the United States. The study revealed that leaders delegating operational tasks to AI could focus more on empowering their teams, identifying new opportunities, and setting strategic goals. This shift is crucial as it allows leaders to engage more deeply in core leadership functions.
A compelling finding from the study is the urgency with which high-growth companies are adopting AI. These companies not only use AI to drive efficiencies but also to fuel their growth. The research indicates that companies with a greater urgency in AI adoption tend to be higher performers. This highlights the importance of viewing AI with a sense of urgency and leveraging the time it frees up to concentrate on high-impact leadership tasks.

The paper "Winning With AI," authored by Sam Ransbotham and colleagues, further examines the landscape of AI adoption in businesses. Published in 2019, the study emphasizes AI's potential rewards, such as improved efficiency, innovative products, and enhanced customer experiences. However, it also points out significant risks, particularly if competitors utilize AI more effectively. By 2019, 45% of executives viewed AI as a risk, up from 37% in 2017, reflecting a growing awareness of AI's competitive threat.
Dedezade's research identifies several challenges leaders face when integrating AI, such as adapting to rapidly changing market environments, fostering a culture that thrives on AI, and developing AI-driven solutions to add value to customer problems. Despite these challenges, high-growth leaders are successfully using AI to enhance decision-making and leadership skills, especially in creating a vision and setting strategy.
Another insightful study, "Artificial Intelligence and the Changing Sources of Competitive Advantage" by Sebastian Krakowski et al., explores AI's impact on competitive capabilities through a resource-based view (RBV). The RBV theory links resources to competitive advantage, traditionally emphasizing human cognition. Krakowski et al. argue that AI challenges these traditional assumptions, necessitating leaders to adapt and develop new skills while maintaining the unique value of human cognition in strategic decision-making.
Leaders in the age of AI must embrace technological advancements with urgency, strategically navigating the complexities and risks AI presents. High-growth companies demonstrate that effective AI adoption can lead to significant operational efficiencies and enhanced strategic decision-making. However, leaders must also balance AI's benefits with preserving the unique cognitive strengths humans bring to strategic decisions. This balance calls for transformational leadership and a clear strategic blueprint to guide leaders in effectively integrating AI into their practices, ensuring they remain competitive and drive sustainable growth in an AI-driven world.
