Leadership at Hindustan Syringes

This is the story of a buisness house and a leadership with immense entrepreneurship, a risk taking ability and a fair degree of foresight . All behavioral traits of good leaders .

The entrepreneurship was woven right from the beginning , by Sh Late Narender Nath, the founder of Hindustan Syringes and Medical Devices Limited , based out of Jaipur India . His son Rajiv Nath has taken it forward building an enterprise of Rs 600 Crores, and the most famous brand in syringes market in India with the 60% market share with Dispovan needles and Dispovan Insulin Syringes having a market share of 70%.

When the most advanced nations like the United States, Britain, France and Germany poured billions of dollars into developing vaccines. However for injecting this vaccines the World needed 8 billion to 10 billion in syringes for injecting these vaccines. Officials in the United states and European Union said they do not have enough syringes for the vaccines.

Rajiv Nath sensed a big opportunity in March 2020. Each of his syringe sells for just Rs5/ . He invested 15 Million dollars to mass produce Speciality syringes even before Purchase orders were even in sight. In May, 2020, he ordered new moulds from suppliers in Italy Germany and Japan to make a variety of barrels and plungers for his syringes. He added 500 workers to his production lines. He started the process of automating the lines paralleley, just in case the manpower shortage hits the organisation becuse of the second wave. Now his machines crank out more than 5900 syringes per minutes at his factory spread over 11 acres in industrial district in Rajasthan. The Company churns out nearly 2.5 billion syringes a year . He is scaling this up to 3 billion in July.

Nath has already sold 15 million syringes to the Japanese government. Another 240 million to be supplied to the Braziian government .Over 400 million syringes is for India’s massive vaccination drive. He has, rightly, allocated 50% of the production for the Indian Market and 50% for the global requirements - saying that the challenge is a global challenge and to the humankind.

To increase efficiency Nath relies on a syringe design by Marc Koska a British Inventor of safety injections. Hindustan syringes makes its needles from steel imported from Japan, but looks at some good Indian supplier under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Initiative .

The point is : Challenges will keep coming , but how many of the us will turn them to the organisation's and the nation's advantage , will be the true leaders .

Do share your thoughts : Even if it is a two liner . Lets light and build the entrepreneurial spirit to make the country great !
