?? #LEADERSHIP: High Road or Low Road ? {#Infographic}

??? As I keep saying, "Only the #Future is Manageable" and "The Future Belongs to Those Who Get There First!"

??? So which road is going to serve you best?

?

?? LOW ROAD is TACTICAL

Low Road is Tactical

??? It favors expedient, logical #IQ actions aimed at giving both you and others what you want, as rapidly and efficiently as possible.

??? While the Low Road maybe easier, it is the road most traveled – and less successful.

?

?? HIGH ROAD is STRATEGIC

High Road is Strategic

??? It draws on your inner voice, emotional intelligence (#EQ) and accumulated experience or wisdom, making the case for fundamental solutions with long-term, broader benefits for everyone.

??? The High Road is much less traveled, requiring 2 distinctive strategic leadership habits:

  • Mindfulness: Clear-minded awareness of one’s own mental activity
  • Mentalizing: Paying attention to what others think and are likely to do

??? The more strategic you become, the easier it is to follow that same approach in the future. Indeed, it can become totally automatic, consistent, and successful.

?

?? COMMON ELEMENTS

??? Before we review each Road in detail (see infographic), there are 2 common elements:

?

Warning Center

??? 1 WARNING CENTER (on the far left) generates feelings of fear, and the sense that something is worth pursuing or avoiding.

??? Anxious feelings related to previous threat experiences and losses can override all other thinking and responses.

?

Self-Referencing Center

??? 2. SELF-REFERENCING CENTER (on the far right) involves your personality and identity, especially how you perceive yourself and relate to others.

??? It correlates with your inner voice that thinks about others, articulates your hopes about the future, and draws on prior experience.

?

?? LOW ROAD

??? The Low Road is the expedient way to fix problems and manage situations.

??? You are following a crowded Road based on 2 major brain functions:

?

Habit Center

??? 1. HABIT CENTER manages automatic IQ thoughts and actions, such as walking up stairs, locking a door, or steering your car.

?

Reactive Self-Referencing Center

??? 2. REACTIVE SELF-REFERENCING CENTER is spontaneously activated when there are IQ thought processes or sensory stimuli primarily related to the self.

??? Low Road activity is based on subjective valuation, concerned with what is valuable and relevant.

  • How fast can we fix this?
  • How easily can we close the deal?
  • What’s in it for me?

??? Low Road leaders may come across as powerful and decisive. But deceptive brain messages frequently arise, ranging from all-or-nothing thinking (win or lose) to complacency (employees and customers won't quit; they have nowhere else to go).

??? They also ask simplistic questions such as:

  • What will consumers pay?
  • What bonus will employees accept?
  • What does the boss want right now?

??? Such business leaders tend to be stuck in the conventional wisdom of their industry. They will be innovation laggards and ultimately fail.

?

?? HIGH ROAD

??? The High Road is much less traveled. These leaders are oriented not just to immediate desires, needs, and success, but to the long-term value of the entire ecosystem and all stakeholders.

??? They have a dispassionate clear-minded future thinking mindset. Using their inner voice, they don't seek expedient outcomes or try to make everyone happy immediately.

??? They draw on 2 major centers of their mind.

?

Executive Center

??? 1. EXECUTIVE CENTER focuses on meaningful aspirations and strategies of how to bring those to fruition.

??? You see a situation from multiple perspectives and act according to their potential and subtle connections.

??? This part of the brain inhibits habitual and impulsive behavior. Such Mindfulness, best developed through meditation, boosts emotional intelligence (EQ) even further.

?

Deliberative Self-Referencing Center

??? 2. DELIBERATIVE SELF-REFERENCING CENTER considers what others are thinking and evaluates their future actions.

  • What is he/she thinking?
  • What will they do next?

??? You Mentalize to figure people out and build a motivated corporate culture.

  • What makes them tick?
  • What are they really thinking about and why?

??? Effective senior executives convey genuine caring about others and what they think and expect.

??? High Road leadership thus is much more authentic than questions such as:

  • How will we fix this problem?

??? The more you shift your mind to the High Road, the more effective you will be.

  • You will routinely step back and look at the bigger and future picture of any strategic situation.
  • You will out-innovate the competition consistently.

??? You will always THINK FUTURE … and WIN !!!
