LEADERSHIP BY EXAMPLE

Verse 21 Chapter 3 of Bhagvat Gita aptly brings out the importance of leadership in organizational context. 

yad yad ācarati ?re??has

tat tad evetaro jana?

sa yat pramā?a? kurute

lokas tad anuvartate

What this essentially means is that whatever the superior person does, that is followed by others also; what standard he or she demonstrates by action, people follow that. A leader cannot demand punctuality from other when he /she is not punctual or preach people to stop smoking if they themselves smoke. A utilitarian approach should be used for decision making when in grey area, where the decision maker considers the effect of each decision alternative on all parties and selects the one that optimizes the satisfaction for the greatest number of people so that it becomes example for others to follow.

Being a role model as leader is the best way of setting standards and principles in any organization.
