Leadership Evolved + Expressed

Leadership Evolved + Expressed

As an Indigenous and spiritually focused leader who is passionate about equity for all, I have been engaging in conversations about leadership with individuals both online and offline in recent weeks. Although it has been challenging at times, I refused to be held back by an old story (oftentimes generational trauma passed down) that no longer serves me or you. Instead, I took time to reflect deeply and considered other viewpoints, which continues to give me the grace to unlearn that old story and move progress.

In the current Western culture, the prevalent story of leadership is a 'territory' to be won, conquered, occupied, and defended. The hyper-masculinized narrative is driven by scarcity, territorialism, competition, and individualism. This viewpoint has been imposed on indigenous peoples and other cultures worldwide, and it does not foster collective leadership. Women and racialized people often face difficulties accessing resources and are subject to biases and stereotypes unnecessarily.

However, the pandemic has given us BOTH time and space to realize that leadership is not a place, destination, or territory to be conquered. The best leaders always focused on relationships rather than where they were sitting, and leadership is a practice, a behavior, and a fluid concept. If we move away from the leadership story of 'getting to the top' and then having to 'defend our ground,' we can build a broader sense of inclusion, equity, and overall health in organizations. This approach creates more opportunities for all and reduces the sense of scarcity and hoarding of wealth. (the world starts cheering)

As leaders, we should view leadership as a collective experience rather than territory, and a leadership role as a moment in time rather than a throne. This approach fosters sustainability for organizations and allows individuals to rest, travel, create, and lead in other ways that contribute to making a better world. I am excited to be in a place where we can share information, build talent, and leave when we are ready, enabling everyone to contribute their best selves to the world.

What is leadership looking like for you right now where you are and are you willing to explore how we can work together to evolve your leadership to generate results and outcomes that serve BOTH the business, the people inside the business, the people the business serves, and the world around you?

Good, message me, and let's get started - our children and the world is waiting.
