Leadership Essentials

Leadership is a complex undertaking. John Maxwell was correct when he said everything depends on leadership. When asked about one thing that a leader should know. John Maxwell answered, saying that the one thing a leader should know is that there is no one thing. Leadership is a complex field that requires many things.

However, I find three things to be crucial on our leadership journey. My leadership journey, which spans two decades, has taught me that if a leader can master these three things, his or her chances of succeeding at leading will increase drastically.

1.???? Effective Communication: Articulating vision is crucial to success as a leader. However, communication is about more than just articulation. It also involves listening. A leader needs to be a good listener. He or she should listen to the people they lead, not only for advice but also to understand the mood in the camp, which reveals the people’s expectations. A leader should also welcome constructive criticism, which can be a great way of getting feedback from those they lead.

2.???? Empowering Others. Successful leaders trust their team enough to delegate tasks appropriately. They also foster an environment where team members feel empowered to take initiative and contribute their ideas. One of my favourite leadership styles is servant leadership. It is the most misunderstood style of leadership. Erroneously, people associate servant leadership with servitude. Servant leadership is all about empowering those you lead with resources and every other support they need to do their tasks. Being a servant leader means that your duty as a leader is to empower, in whatever way, those that you lead so they can do their work well and effectively.

3.???? Continuous Learning and Ability to Adapt: Great leaders seek to improve themselves and their teams. They are always looking for new ways of doing things. As a result, they continuously improve themselves. They remain adaptable in the face of change. Always learning from both successes and failures. Great leaders encourage a culture of growth and innovation within their organization. This is done at every level of the organisation.

These are my three leadership essentials. As Maxwell says, there are a lot of these essentials. Let me hear from you what yours are.
