Is trust earned or given? Such a small question. And yet it has an extremely profound impact. I recently looked at the stats from Professor Paul Zak's article in the Harvard Business Review on the Neuroscience of Trust. It is fascinating to see the different experiences low-trust vs high-trust companies have. Here is a reminder on some of the stats if you have not read the article.
People at high-trust companies report: 74% less stress, 106% more energy at work, 50% higher productivity, 13% fewer sick days, 76% more engagement, 29% more satisfaction with their lives, 40% less burnout.
A climber does not ask the rope to earn its trust. The climber trusts the rope completely from the beginning. I am not comparing people to ropes, but if we don't give people trust, from the beginning the invisible barrier of unconscious mistrust will stay. So we have to make the jump to complete trust. This is just one reason, I have found, why some give up the journey of leadership. Somewhere they experienced half-hearted trust and made a decision they don't want to treat people like this. And so the abandoned the journey, because they equated earning trust with leadership.

3 年Even though i think trust is earned, I do sometimes feel there should be a bit of give too. Leadership is a two way streak of also Leading by example. Very old school but still one of those values i have seen work time and time again. Valuable question and like you say profound impact!
