Leadership Endurance

Leadership Endurance

An article by Brandyn Jacob: People First Leadership Strategist

You know it when you see it, the look in their eyes, as if they have just run a marathon, but finished dead last. The look of exhaustion, defeat, a balloon that is struggling to hold on to a little resemblance of what it once was, full of shape and bounce and fun.

It is unavoidable, leaders will inevitably hit a wall. The pressures to perform, taking on too much responsibility, carrying too much weight. It is how leaders respond to the situation that can make all the difference.

While sitting on a beach, with a Mia Tia in hand, may provide some relief, it is typically a trip laced with guilt, and anxiety, thinking of what is waiting for you when you get back in the office. Don't get me wrong, taking time away is important but being able to enjoy it is way better.

Leaders have to stay sharp, investing in yourself consistently, sharpen the saw, challenge the brain, continue to learn and grow. This provides leaders a chance to feel like the student again, just show up and learn, participate, not having to lead. Even those at the top of their game, can always learn something. You would be amazed in the charge or spark it brings.

Recognize your feelings, if you can identify in yourself when you are not at your best, that's half the battle. Catch it before it gets too big and you can't see the finish line. Challenge yourself to set short term, achievable milestones to get through the toughest of times. I keep a notebook by my bed, if that list is of things to do is nagging you and keeping you up- write it down and turn it off.

Take a breathe, every moment with your team is an opportunity. A drop of trust that is added or removed from the relationship. Imagine the challenge ahead and the added pressure if you lose one of your top performers because you weren't giving them your best. Pause, clear your mind of your distractions before you engage with them, be there for them in the moment. Your pile will wait.

Catching on? In the next piece we will talk more how to get through the weight, the burden that is holding you back from doing the thing you love the most- just lead.

We all have moments of self doubt. Everyone. You have to find your realm of possibility. What can you inch closer to. Some people can see the big picture, others just need to see the baby step of that endurance to know what they can do in small measure, then reflect back on all those baby steps, resulting in all the things they've accomplished.
