“Leadership- Dynamics of Leader and followers!” - Leadership Matters! - Part-3

Hello Friends,

Leadership is one of the most talked about topics from the time immemorial of human existence on this planet, Mother Earth. And leadership is universal phenomenon applicable to all the living beings. The leadership automatically connected with the Power, Control, Action, Goals, Delivery, Responsibility, Consolidation and Sustainability. Is it true that the leaders are borne?

Or do they emerge accidently? Can leaders be made? Is there leadership in everybody? Can it be taught, or, learned? Leadership, one of the most enigmatic subjects of Behavioral and Management Science is gaining extraordinary importance in this modern techno-scientific age around the world. I would share with you one of the oldest thoughts from erstwhile philosopher on the leadership which throws the light on today’s situations, more relevantly.

Functional Organizational Leadership

Secret of Influential Leadership

"Good business Leaders create vision, articulate a vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion"

--Jack Welsh, CEO, General Electric.

The Superior Leader gets things done,

With very little motion.

He imparts instructions not through many words.

But through few deeds.

He keeps informed about everyday,

But interferes hardly at all.

He is catalyst.

And although things wouldn’t get done as well

If he weren’t there,

When they succeed, he takes no credit.

And because he takes no credit

Credit never leaves him.

an was always motivated by power, acquiring power to control others. One of the motives of the man is to possess power. Leadership attitudes spring-up from the same. However, the kinds of leaderships differ from persons to persons and organizations to organizations, due to uniqueness of individuals and the different nature of organizational work.

One question always troubled the minds of the thinkers in this field and that is," Are the leaders born? Or they made?"

The deeper research in this subject has thrown light on this aspect of leadership. There are ways of exerting leadership. After Second World War, the whole world has gone through the sudden requirement of leaders in entire human society and has brought in the necessity of understanding the subject especially in the industrial world. It is considered that the personality of the person who is in the saddle of the leader has greatest effect of his functional leadership and there are some definite norms, which can make or mar the leaders, whatever may be the power of their personality. That means it is an art and the science both. That is why probably the Great Chanakya had chosen Chandragupta to fight against Nand and made him into Samrat Chandragupta while teaching him the finer principles of Leadership.

Managerial leadership differs widely, and due to this we come across various types of leaderships among the officers. The Behavioral researchers have identified various styles of leaderships during the last eighty years.

Broadly they are classified as follows –

·????? Autocratic Leadership -- Managers or Officers who are highly authoritative, who would not like to lose control at any time. They do not give freedom to their subordinates.

·????? Democratic Leadership -- Managers or Officers who believe in giving reasonable freedom of action to their subordinates. These manager, executives, officers are conscious consensus builder through participation and belief in others. They are team-builders in general.

·????? Affiliative Leadership -- Managers or Officers who are friendly with the subordinates. They are more sentimental types.

·????? Coercive Leadership -- Manager or Officers who are manipulative, exploitative, self-centered, insensitive and inhuman in nature in relation with their subordinates. All the dictators in the history were invariable coercive leaders, right from Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Mao, Gaddafi and many others from around the world.

·????? Coaching Leadership -- Manager or Officers who are good teachers to their subordinates. They inspire through empowerment of their subordinates.

·????? Pace-Setting Leadership -- Managers or Officers who are dynamic, energetic and goal-oriented leaders, who enthuse subordinates. They are restless, uncompromising on work and delivery, self-motivated, initiators and 24 X 7 obsessed with work, progress and delivery.?

·????? Unassuming Leadership -- Managers or Officers who are down to earth simple leaders. Simplicity is their motivational tool.

There is no one method of leading our subordinates as the managers or officers. Therefore the approach to manage the people can be different for different officer and his subordinates.

Are the leaders constantly successful, always? -

No. There are ups and downs in the life of all kinds of leaders. Because the Leadership is essentially the Function, but we always equate it with Person in the role of leadership. What is this Function of a Leader?

This can be explained from the following equation--

Leadership = f (I, F, & S)

It is the function (f) of Leader himself (I), Followers (F), & the Situation (S).

All the three elements are variables, I, Personality of the leader undergoes change in personality with times, Followers change very often with lesser higher degree, and Situation is never the same always, it is highly changeable element. Therefore the sometimes Leader is on very high level of achievements or down in dumps at some or the other times, as he is the product of many variables. The situation varies drastically from time to time.

Therefore, Type of Leadership depends upon the Personality of the Leader, Personalities of the Subordinates, and the Situation.

Thus, Situational Approach to exert the leadership style is considered the more suitable style if we want to succeed in the given task. The Situational Leadership is finally the MOST IMPORTANT RESULT-ORIENTED LEADERSHIP, proven time and again in all walks of human life and endeavors!

SOME BASIC HUMAN VALUES

Think it over

Freedom: It does not mean the license to be irresponsible, undisciplined or derelict in one’s duties. It also does not mean encroaching on somebody else’s rights and privacy. It also does not mean snatching, grabbing or looting others deliberately or consciously. It does not mean abdicating the moral responsibility. It does not mean expecting everything on a platter without the due efforts or the caliber. It means bringing more self-direction, self-control, self-discipline, self- management with dedication and sense of discharging duties truthfully to the self. “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty” so said Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru long ago.???

Loyalty: Loyalty does not mean being subservient. It does not mean lying low always. It does not mean de-meaning yourself. It does not mean becoming a sycophant, an informer or a spy for somebody. It also does not mean pleasing others in a false manner. But it means serving your organization with utmost honesty, integrity, devotion, so as to experience the real feeling of joy and inner peace. It means working for your genuine sense of achievement for yourself and the organization above all! IF YOU THINK YOU CAN BECOME LEADER, YOU WILL, NOTHING CAN STOP EXCEPT - YOUR “SELF”!

Thanks.
