Articles of the Week

Last week our Deeper Dive focused on The Resiliency Myth. So this article, “CEOs are Quitting in Droves”, while unfortunate, is not surprising.

Research Proves Your Brain Needs a Break. The title says it all. Our brains are exhausted from being “always on”, context-shifting and being addicted to our devices and social/news media scrolling (see concept below). As business athletes, our brains need rest and recovery time to perform at their peak.

Concept of the Week

POPCORN BRAIN ?? Coined by researcher David Levy, popcorn brain is when our brain circuitry starts to ‘pop” from being overstimulated by the fast-paced information stream. Over time, our brains get habituated to this constant streaming of information, making it harder to look away and disconnect from our devices, slow down our thoughts, and live fully offline, where things move at a much different, and slower pace.

Stats of the Week

87% of people scroll their phones within 5 minutes of waking up

50% of people check their phone in the middle of the night

Tools of the Week

1.) Put boundaries and guardrails around the use of your devices. They are impacting your health, decreasing your ability to focus, and adversely impacting your ability to show up as the most effective leader you can be.

2.) Incorporate breaks between meetings allow the brain to “reset,” reducing a cumulative buildup of stress across meetings.

3.) For guidance on deeper work, read this.

Question of the Week

What are you doing to actively strengthen your resiliency muscle?
