Leadership: a different paradigm

Leadership is not a designation, I have seen people with big designations but no so great leaders.
Leadership is an attitude, a mindset. It conditions your brain to think and act with empathy, righteousness, and precision. Leadership is taking initiative.
Great leaders have followers -- people follow them for who they are, not what their title is. Why do people follow them? Because they trust them, like them, and get inspired by them.
Leadership is contagious. If you hangout with a great leader, you'll become a leader. Great leaders don't "lead", they inspire people to become leaders with their actions. Actions speak louder than words. I was fortunate enough to work closely with some great leaders, still working with some. I learned a lot from them -- just by observing them. I know others that learned from me -- again, just by observing. So leadership spreads.
I believe that anyone can develop the leadership mindset. Like anything else, it requires practice. If you are lucky enough to hangout with great leaders, that's the fastest route. If not, you can start with identifying leaders that truly inspire you, read about them, and find ways to adopt their mindset. Start small and practice, practice, practice. Over time, it will become part of your nature.
