Leadership
I enjoy artist Hugh MacLeod's take on things. Here is his drawing on 'leadership'. He brings a unique perspective in a unique medium. He draws his work on business cards, or at least he did at the beginning.
How about this one? Is the art of leadership about creating greatness in others?

8 年I have always monitored the development of growth (greatness) in others by monitoring such factors as: 1) the development of a positive, "I can do this" attitude, 2) conscious success at working on and improving personal weaknesses, 3) increased number and quality of contributions to the organization, 4) recognition of the person's "personal growth" by others, 5) being recruited and/or hired to more challenging positions, etc. www.theorganizationwhisperer.com
David, thanks for the response, which was food for thought You say that leaders are “doing things that will or potentially lead to greatness in others” that makes sense. However, if we don’t know what the greatness is then we also don’t know what might potentially create it. If we look at the potentials as aspiration or motivation, without clearly knowing the outcome of greatness then aspirations and motivation towards it seems a fruitless. We are doing things that we think will create greatness in others but we have no means to know what actions lead to it and if it is created. Therefore, while the sentiment of creating greatness makes sense, but in practice it is pointless sentiment as we can never know if we are creating it or not. If we cannot know if we are creating it then it seems like any efforts towards it are wasted – it rings of pointless sentiment and pointless actions if we cannot clearly articulate it and know the outcome. In which case, perhaps efforts might be more beneficial if applied somewhere else I’m sure this can’t be the case, but while creating greatness resonates with me I’m finding it hard to get a handle on. Again, any views appreciated.

8 年it′s a capability which, we need development and improvement if we want to achieve the goals and targets, to get these results, we need to talk with all people who have participated in this process to explain about we want to achieve.

8 年Maybe great leadership is about giving other people the opportunity to create and show their greatness themselves?
It makes sense that creating greatness in others is important. However, I'm struggling with how a leader knows that he/she has created greatness in others. It's fairly certain that any leader would want to think they've created greatness so would see greatness based on their views. Therefore, every leader who feels they have created greatness in others indeed as. I'm assuming there must be some universal measure associated with creating greatness in others so that an individual leader can be a she would, and also issued in comparison with other leaders, that they have indeed created greatness. I'm struggling to pin this down and without clarity, while the wish to create greatness makes sense, in practice it is meaningless as it would always be a subjective judgement, never knowing greatness has been created. Perhaps I'm overthinking this.
