On Leadership, Context, and Sticky Notes

A Brief Note from Me (Jeremiah!)

Welcome! It’s Vol. 6 of this endeavor, and I’m back to bring a few minutes of value to your day.

When you read or hear the word leader, what comes to mind? Likely some trite platitudes that we’ve been conditioned to involuntarily recite: knowledgeable, empathetic, decisive, experienced, thoughtful, successful – just to list a few. What if we thought about it differently?????

Last week, I attended the Mitch Daniels Leadership Foundation annual event that included a fireside chat between Mitch Daniels & Mark Miles. What strikes me about those two is not the attributes from above but the wake of leaders that they’ve cultivated throughout their careers. It’s a testament to their work and the way in which they lead. Leadership is not how many followers you have but how many leaders you create!

Let’s Figure It Out together,

Js

Something I've Written

We all know that for the last two months, I was streaming the Olympics (on a multiview TV, of course), so it only makes sense that I poured my thoughts on the biggest show in sports into my August blog post, Going for Gold: Three Critical Lessons in Operations from the 2024 Olympics. P.S. – would you swim in the Seine?

On another sports-related note… I’ve got a new piece out with Authority Magazine! I discuss my upbringing in sports and how it made me the person I am today. Take a peek to see my tips on training great leaders and how I use game plans in my day-to-day as the UnConsultant.

Did you miss my exclusive Spotify playlist? Good news: as a loyal member of the Figure it Out family, you get access! Let me know your favorite off the list or what you would add to the mix.

Someone Who's Figured It Out

Trevor Noah and Adam Grant talk about the importance of context in a recent episode of Adam’s podcast “ReThinking”. It’s a profound discussion that challenges us to consider how we communicate and what comes with each person’s perspective, life experience and bias. It’s a good thought experiment to be engaged in more often and integrate into our interactions. Take a listen on Apple Podcasts or Spotify and let me know what you think!

Also! Step away from the baggage claim conveyor belt!??

2. Digital Sticky Notes App: Am I showing my age if I say, “a new version of the ones that bordered your computer monitor just a few years ago?” Or how about “where you kept your secret password under your keyboard?”

3. People: The ones in your life who are absolute light and challenge your thinking to support your growth.

4. Repeat clients: Not only because they come back for future engagements but because they’re the best business development tool out there. “Hey, let me introduce you to someone that might be able to help.”

5. Journalists: Those who do the work for the respective business publications you read daily, and those who keep us informed and educated on the matters that matter as we sprint to the end of the Presidential election cycle here in the U.S.A.!
