The Leadership Compass: Charting Success Through uncertainty and unpredictability

In today's complicated world, also known as a VUCA world (Volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity), leaders frequently have to make decisions even when they're not sure of what might happen next. Sometimes a leader has to grasp with uncertainty, and other times, with unpredictability. Most times, these two terms are used interchangeably, but knowing that these are different concepts helps leaders to shape appropriate approaches that can lead to better decisions and more effective leadership.

Uncertainty refers to the extent to which outcomes are known or unknown. Unpredictability on the other hand is when a surprise or unforeseen issue hits you. Let me illustrate these concepts with examples:

  1. Certainty vs. Uncertainty: Certainty: Imagine you are planning an indoor workshop. You know the venue's capacity, the resources available, and how many attendees have confirmed. This scenario is certain because you have all the necessary information and control over the environment.Uncertainty: Now, suppose you are planning an outdoor event. You're unsure if the weather will remain favorable despite checking forecasts. This introduces uncertainty because, despite your planning, external factors (like weather) can change, affecting the event's success.
  2. Predictability vs. Unpredictability: Predictability: If you have a yearly meeting that always happens in the first week of January, there's a predictability to it. Everyone involved can anticipate and plan for it because it follows a known pattern. Unpredictability: However, if an unexpected issue arises—say a critical leader resigns suddenly, the predictability of meeting might decrease. The future of such meetings become less predictable because this event introduces few variables (the new leader may not like this arrangement) that were not part of the original plan.

When the outcomes are unknown, the uncertainty is high, and when there are likely to be surprises along the way, unpredictability is high. Managing uncertainty and unpredictability requires different strategies and tactics. The management of uncertainty often requires preparation so that the outcomes can still be achieved, while the management of unpredictability requires flexibility, or the ability to pivot as required. ??

When something is just uncertain, or unpredictable, they are challenging by themselves. But it gets really complicated when the situation is both uncertain and unpredictable- that could be a double whammy! Here is one way to think about the different permutations and combinations of uncertainty and unpredictability and figure out what to do when you are confronted with either or both.

Avoiding Common Leadership Mistakes

Awareness of potential pitfalls in each quadrant is crucial. Leaders might fall into the trap of complacency under high certainty and predictability or overemphasize control in certain but unpredictable scenarios. Similarly, inadequate preparation for change in predictable yet uncertain environments or paralysis by analysis in completely unpredictable and uncertain contexts can derail organizational objectives.

Successful leadership requires a nuanced understanding of when to enforce structure and when to allow flexibility, ensuring that the organization can adapt to external changes while maintaining a cohesive and motivated workforce.

By tailoring interventions to specific challenges and maintaining awareness of potential leadership pitfalls, organizations can navigate complex landscapes with greater resilience and agility. Leaders equipped with this understanding can foster environments that not only withstand but thrive amidst change, ensuring sustained success and growth.

Great post as usual Dr. Raghu Krishnamoorthy ?? Given the VUCA environment we operate in, I'm curious: do you think the recommendations for navigating uncertainty and unpredictability have evolved from what they would have been pre-covid? Keen to know how have you adjusted or evolved your recommendations in response to the heightened volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.
