Leadership and coaching

Leadership and coaching

Leadership, in the simplest terms, is about guiding a group of people to work together for common vision. Leadership involves effective communication, decision-making, and the ability to empower and inspire others to do their best. Ultimately, leadership is about making a positive impact and bringing out the best in people to achieve shared objectives.

?

Coaching is focused on unlocking the person’s potential, helping them to discover their own solutions, and empowering them to take action towards their desired outcomes.

?

Leadership and coaching are not separate dimensions. Rather, they complement each other quite nicely. A great leader is generally regarded as a great coach. The leader firmly believes in bringing everyone together to work for a common vision, empowering individuals, and ensuring that everyone performs at their optimal potential.

?

In the past, some of the great leaders have given a better direction to the world. These leaders have demonstrated the power of asking thought-provoking questions to stimulate dialogue, challenge assumptions, and inspire meaningful action.

?

  1. Martin Luther King Jr. - As a renowned leader in the American Civil Rights Movement, King frequently offered thought-provoking questions that challenged cultural conventions and prejudices. His famous inquiry, "What are you doing for others?" prompted people to consider their roles in advancing equality and justice, resulting in enormous societal transformation.
  2. Albert Einstein: Known for his breakthrough contributions to physics, Einstein also offered thought-provoking questions that transformed our knowledge of the universe. His inquiries into the nature of space, time, and reality sparked scientific curiosity and spurred new directions in research.

There are many more examples available where leaders have empowered the people to live a better life and create a sustainable society for others to live.

By leveraging the coaching skills, a leader can foster innovation in the team, enhance the team performance, build a culture of continuous improvement and promote the growth mindset. These are important for each organisation or society in order to grow. A leader's primary goal is to make people aware of themselves and how they may grow, and they accomplish this without telling them what to do or not do. Each person is unique in their own way, thus leaders always aim to challenge their status quo and ask important questions to help people recognise that their best version is yet to come.

?

It’s also important? to consider that a leader wears multiple hats beyond coaching as well, depending on the nature of different situations like time sensitivity or? where they might have to guide the team and lead with an example, suggest improvement areas or impart knowledge. In such situations, a leader goes beyond the inquisitive approach of a coach. A great leader is well adept in knowing how and when to switch the roles.

?

Many researches on leadership and coaching have concluded that the result is phenomenal when the combination of both the approaches was applied. They led to empowered people and helped them to flourish. Such people have seen challenges as opportunities to grow and are ready to learn new things.???
