Leadership Burnout

Something Silly:

Since the topic of #burnout is far from silly, I wanted to share this nugget instead: According to?a research paper ?on burnout, descriptions of burnout can be found across many different times and cultures, even going as far back as the Old Testament and Shakespeare's writings.

Something Serious:

  • Among #employees and business leaders,?three out of five (59%)?say their organizations ?take some steps to guard against burnout, even though?nearly a third (29%)?wish businesses would display more empathy.
  • Almost 60% of #leaders reported feeling worn out at the end of each day, which can be an indication of burnout. One?recent survey found? that?44% of leaders?who feel worn and used up planned to move to a new company in order to advance their careers.
  • 26% of those same respondents?plan to leave their current company within one year.
  • Approximately 44% of?leaders?who feel used up at the end of the day expected to change companies in order to advance; 26% expected to leave within the next year.
  • Those with high potential for #leadership have faced even greater stress. One survey of more than 1,000 high-potential workers found that 86% of them felt exhausted by the end of the day, an?increase of 27%?over the previous year.?

Here's how to combat burnout:

Focus on balancing your energy by having a list of activities that will replenish you physically and emotionally. Schedule it and do it. By creating a structure, reducing your daily decisions often reduces your stress.

Lastly, a tried-and-true psychological ruse is to "bundle your energy". What this means is to couple an unpleasant activity with a pleasant one. Hate the morning check-in on Zoom? Try this: Prepare your favorite coffee drink to enjoy during this unfavorite part of your day.

Remember:

  • Feeling depleted, exhausted, and even distant is a normal response to stress.
  • Make self-reflection a constant and seek to identify the emotional and mental signs of stress you're experiencing.
  • Prioritize your basic needs and take daily mental breaks.
  • Create and nurture supportive connections with your colleagues, friends, and families.

Lastly, seek the support of a trained and licensed professional if you need it. Many therapists are available over the phone and online
