LEADERSHIP IS BUILDING YOUR OWN TABLE WITH SAMUEL BROOKSWORTH

LEADERSHIP IS BUILDING YOUR OWN TABLE WITH SAMUEL BROOKSWORTH

We all have our own experiences, some of which we're proud of and some of which we're not. Whether the experiences are good or bad, how we see them often determines how they affect our lives and careers, and could also determine how we lead. These experiences can be the foundations upon which to build your own table.

In this episode of the Everyday Leadership Podcast, I'm joined by Samuel Brooksworth . Samuel founded Remoteli and currently serves as its CEO. Many notable institutions and businesses have benefited from his expertise, including The Guardian, The Chartered Institute of Marketing, Lloyds Banking Group, the University of Nottingham, Coventry University London, the University of Liverpool in London and Young Enterprise UK.

During our conversation, we covered many topics, including his upbringing as a black man in the United Kingdom, the inspiration behind Remoteli, the importance of supporting African talent, the impact marriage has had on his career and personal development, and the transformative power of faith.

“We [men] don’t have it as difficult as black women… When I see some of the experiences of black women in workplaces, especially what my wife goes through… I don’t know how black women do it, because if some of the instances that I've seen my wife especially got from work if I was to go through it, I'd have snapped a long time ago.”

“When you're black in the UK, you're always on edge at work… coming into work, you don’t want to make a mistake… all your work is being put under the microscope… you could get a hundred things right, the one thing that goes slightly sideways people pull up. Your colleagues will be doing a hundred things wrong, the one thing they do right is then praised.”

“There's a lot of individuals who haven’t travelled outside of the UK or only know Africa through what they have seen from the media. So their idea of Africa isn’t of a progressive, growing, intelligent, beautiful continent. It's all some sort of poverty-stricken, lack of accessibility to all things, living in shacks, not beautiful buildings, poor internet connectivity, just things that they've been told. That is not Africa.”

“When people think outsourcing, people always think Asia - India, Philippines. We want to change that. When people think of outsourcing, we want to think of Africa. We want to think of excellence. We want to think the best outsourcing is from Africa through Remoteli. We want them to see things differently when they think of Africa.”

My definition of leadership is individuals who can inspire people to work with them and to help push in a common direction. And great leaders are individuals who can raise people to be able to take over from them if they're not around. For me. that's great leadership.”

Samuel provided numerous insights into his life, business growth, and achievement. If you're navigating entrepreneurship or planning to start a business, you should listen to this episode.
