LEADERSHIP IN A BOX

LEADERSHIP IN A BOX

One of the rarest things to find in today’s world is authentic leadership.

It is the demonstration of humility to the extent that people are inspired to support your vision without having to be threatened, manipulated or forced.

Won’t you agree?

In these days when notable people in positions of authority are ignoble to the extent of using their power to oppress rather than uplift everyone else, when many of those who were voted into office are concerned about nothing else but the satisfaction of their egos, true leadership seem to now only exist in a box.

We hear of great leaders but experience the incapacity of others.

We read about heroic leaders in a book, but only see the arrogant display of others on the television.

We use quotations by great leaders of the past to explain the true meaning of leadership but are subjected to the imbecility of others in today’s world.

Does leadership now only exist in a box?

And with the death of yet another leadership icon, Kofi Annan, the former secretary-general of the United Nations, one begins to wonder whether we now have more leaders in a box than those roaming the face of the earth aimlessly, ignorantly, arrogantly, nonchalantly and selfishly.

It was my late mentor and friend, Dr. Myles Munroe, who once said:

“The wealthiest place in the world is not the gold mines of South America or the oil fields of Iraq or Iran. They are not the diamond mines of South Africa or the banks of the world. The wealthiest place on the planet is just down the road. It is the cemetery. There lie buried companies that were never started, inventions that were never made, bestselling books that were never written, and masterpieces that were never painted. In the cemetery is buried the greatest treasure of untapped potential”.

What’s your take on this?

If you were to apply this philosophy to leadership, you will find that most of the examples of exemplary leadership in today’s world are coming from a box.

Otherwise, how come we keep quoting Abraham Lincoln who died in 1865, Mahatma Gandhi who died in 1948, John Fitzgerald Kennedy who died in 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. who died in 1968, Mother Teresa who died in 1997, Nelson Mandela who died in 2013, and now, Kofi Annam who died last week?

In fact, due to the scarcity of exceptional leaders today, we can’t help but go as far back as two thousand years ago to quote Jesus Christ, and even further backward to the likes of Socrates, Aristotle, and Plato.

If we don’t make the time to learn and embody the leadership principles which we continue to honour the dead for, what inspiring quotations and examples would we leave for future generations?

This is why we convene leaders from all over the world in Toronto annually for our exciting and exclusive Canada Leadership Summit.

As I wrote in my book, The Mystique of Leadership:

“If you think holding a position of authority makes you a leader, you may never become one. If you think not holding a position of authority does not make you a leader, you may never become one either"

I went on to say "Leadership is not an act, but an art, for it demands the originality of an artist and the level of imagination that can produce a masterpiece.” The world is waiting on your to speak up and step out.

P.S. Early bird ticket ends soon

See you at the summit!!
