The Leadership Blue Ocean Strategy

One tool that I applied and found it useful is the Leadership Blue Ocean Strategy, developed by Chan K. and Renee M. Like any strategy it is an action-based model. It introduced strategy canvas with 4-pillars, which focuses on the inside vs outside to challenge the status quo and unlock the untapped potential of innovation and energy within you and your team, rather than focusing on who they need to be.

I personally used it (time to re-use it too) to inspect what acts and activities I need to re-set, re-energize, and change. In essence, it drives you through asking four questions that challenge your/your team’s current leadership reality which will eventually shape your leadership profile.

1) Eliminate: Which acts and activities do leaders (or I) invest their time and intelligence in that should be eliminated? .. For example: stop having mutliple people owning the same initiative, or requesting frequent detailed reports/progress reports ..etc.

2) Reduce: Which acts and activities do leaders invest their time and intelligence in that should be reduced well below their current level? .. For example: Diving into operational problems to put out fires, reducing email communication, reduce recurring meetings "the unnecessarily ones" ..etc.

3) Raise: Which acts and activities do leaders invest their time and intelligence in that should be raised well above their current level? .. For example: Proactively dealing with low performers, spending more time with senior leadership, mentor and coach more, set performance goals jointly with the team, or set time for learning & development ..etc.

4) Create: Which acts and activities should leaders invest their time and intelligence in that they currently don’t undertake? .. For example: Explaining business strategy clearly, conducting forum for operational improvements, or share best practices with the team ..etc.
