Leadership Blind Spot #13 No Methodologies and Systems

This Blind Spot is not having process or methodology within the organisation. Now, that means we tend to wing it. I know that’s not true for everybody and I know that’s not true 100% of the time.

Certain things we have methodology for such as figuring out commissions. How to do P & L’s. Making sure that the bills are paid. All the engineering aspects of our organisation, shipping, and things like that. But, even then, we have some methodology and processes but to necessarily all the way through.

In some industries, we want process and methodology. I certainly want it with pilots. I certainly want it with surgeons. I don’t want them making it up as they go along.

Why don’t we want it within our department, our group? The majority of time it’s because we believe it’s micromanagement. I don’t have time to pull out and figure out if I’m following the process. I don’t think it has to be that way. It is viewed as an inhibitor versus an enhancer.

Following process and methodology simply says, “What are the five or six steps that I should be doing to follow x?” I do it all the time. If we were to say, “Hey, we’re going to do a product launch, here’s the process that you follow,” I’m going to ensure that I have a great product launch and not go back and say, “Gosh, why didn’t we do x, y, and Z?”

So, if you want to shrink our mistakes, then go to methodology and go to process. Again, what kills is if you have a 38 page book on something that could have really been a one pager.

Sit down with your team and ask them, “Over the last six months, as an employee, what were the areas that you felt we could have done a better job training you? You didn’t know this, or you didn’t have a process to do that.”

They’ll tell you in two seconds.

Sit down with your team every six months. Update your process and methodologies. Keep it short. Keep it simple. Keep it sweet. Therefore, it will be productive.
