Article 14 in my "Leaders Are Born to Be Made!" series continues to share my leadership and management insights to drive strategic execution-personally and professionally. Each article discusses the "world-class leadership behavior and/or management best practice" associated with the featured letter of the A.G.I.L.E. L.E.A.D.E.R.S.H.I.P. with a G.R.I.P. framework. The featured letter of this article continues with the "G" in A.G.I.L.E.; which introduces the “Ten Goals to Excellence” of Goal-Oriented Behavior. The previous articles discussed the Goals to Excellence: Goal #1: Know the Terrain, Goal #2: Seize opportunity, Goal #3: Find a Mentor, Goal #4 Radiate zeal, Goal #5: Work with Tenacity, Goal #6: Provide Mind-Boggling Service, Goal #7 Build A Team, Goal #8: Do More With Less, and Goal #9: Improve Team and Corporate Performance.
This article will discuss my final goal-Goal #10: Give Something Back
#10: Give Something Back
“The man on top of the mountain didn’t fall there” – Vince Lombardi
This quote from the great American football coach Vince Lombardi highlights that every accomplishment achieved by anyone was done on the shoulders of others who sacrificed, inspired, educated, and protected them. Thus, you are OBLIGATED to “Pay it Forward.” You may be asking yourself the question, “What can I do to “Pay it forward?” Your answer will allow you to determine what you can do to “give something back” to your community. Of course, if whatever success you have attained was achieved without anyone’s help, or you are just plain selfish, you won’t feel the need to achieve this goal.
Let me conclude giving something back provides a reason to contribute to something bigger than you—a great cause builds a great you. Just look at the many professional organizations in business and sports whose community outreach programs contribute resources—people, money, facilities, etc.—to benefit others less fortunate. Before Mr. George C. Frazier attained the successes and failures that earned him the notoriety and distinction of becoming Dr. George C. Frazier, the founder and CEO of FraserNet told me, “When it comes to community, you have to be willing to give until it hurts!” Now mind you, I have been a community volunteer since high school but hearing these profound words from a man who would become so globally respected and well-decorated resonated in my soul. As I continue to be humble in my success and marvel at the success of others the common thread that runs thorough us all is our DUTY to uplift society. So, I ask you, “Is Your Giving Hurting?”
This article concludes sharing my insights on goal-oriented behavior. The first six goals explain how wanna-be leaders can grow themselves to become competent personally and professionally. The last four goals shed light on how to become great leaders by growing others. You must have a goal(s) to lead. Remember the following:
Leader of one; leader of many; If you can’t lead one; you can’t lead any.
