Leadership began with you, continued with 2.0, now is H2H in Pulse 3.0

Leadership began with you, continued with 2.0, now is H2H in Pulse 3.0

Success is goals and everything else is commentary.  I have used this leadership principle which I once read in Brian Tracy′s Goals (the Bible of goal setting in all fields) to attempt to explain the title of this article.

My goal is to raise the point that leadership starts with you.  This has always been the case. But as LinkedIn was a major success in the 2.0 world from 2008 to 2013 you do need to lead a leadership community, this meaning your own leadership brand.  And already in 2015 the overwhelming success of Pulse 3.0 requires you to be at the cutting edge of the H2H era.

Introduction

There still is a great abuse with the term leader. All the inputs around Leadership during the last 30 years, lacked substance thus creating hype that had no practical value.

This lack of practical value was because it was widely missed that leadership is not an endowed consequence of positionship, just as singing ability is not an endowed consequence of having a voice.  The skills that people see in a leader are not always quantifiable or immediately recognizable but they know when they see it and they know when it is missing.

But – nowadays - being just a manager, is far from enough!.  This jpg at American Leadership sums it up very well

In other words if you are a boss who does act like a leader you are failing.  Conversely if you are a leader but not a boss you are succeeding.  If you have the temptation of arguing that the image is just one of many, let me quote two different experts  from both 1.0 and 2.0 worlds

-It's not what happens to me but what happens in me that matters most. -John C Maxwell

-American Leadership Most Leadership Advice Is Useless. Here's What I Really Learned in Running 20 Companies https://lnkd.in/e4j3Xhp

"Being a leader doesn’t mean you are the guy who runs things.

Being a leader doesn’t mean you created something or you did something great in the past or some other person has given you any kind of authority.

Being a leader happens RIGHT NOW, today, and can be done without money, without authority, and without anybody. First, you have to lead yourself.

Many companies have been treating humans during the last 30 years as “resources” They will have to go again through the experience of treating humans as creators and innovators , because true leading means creating"- James Altucher, LinkedIn Influencer

Well I think I have been able to highlight it very well with both 1.0 and 3.0 examples, but just in case here is a powerful message from Robin Sharma

Ronald C.Stern: 10 minimum leadership requirements

Ronald Stern′s leadership model is based on his copyright spiritual intelligence concept which, to my mind, is a must apply in today′s turbulent world.

Many companies have been treating humans during the last 30 years as “resources” They will have to go again through the experience of treating humans as creators and innovators , because true leading means creating

  • FUTURE,
  • CONFIDENCE AND
  • BELIEF IN IT.

While being aware of the company’s most important objective: its mission for its customers, as well as the vision where the company has to be in the future. Ronald argues, with reason that  a leader, has to able to achieve a shared vision with his stakeholders and meets the following minimum requirements:

1)  Ronald holds that a real leader is neither charismatic nor born. A leader is not born, because he is made; and when he ceases to make himself a leader, he has ceased to be one. The "born leader" is precisely what we do not need anymore; because he is a visceral and egomaniac one.

2) Ronald views that, a leader, demands more of himself, than others expect of him: He must be an example!.  All his self-training, on top of a very satisfactory completion of his duties, evidences his exemplary role.

3) Ronald also thinks that he has the moral strength - as a leader - to be tough and demanding with his team mates, because he believes more in them, than they do in themselves. Affection and love are demanding. Always! - If not, they’re gone!

 4) A leader has a heart and love for each person of his team and needs to know the expectations each one has of the leader. If the leader cannot deliver, he says it clearly and transparently. As a leader, he offers friendship, not privileges.

5) A leader does not tolerate the reign of fear in his team. He promotes courage and initiative of all individuals to take risks, make mistakes, in order to leave every day the limits of their comfort zone. He makes them grow, overcoming fear into challenge.

6) Ronald understands that a leader is ahead, not “above”.  He expects his peers to disagree openly.  His communication style is wide open with both peers and superiors thereby earning the respect of both.

7) Ronald sticks to the principle that leader is a "primus inter pares" humbly working without whims and teaming up with peers. Shares sadness and joys, feasts and games with both his team and superiors worldwide.

8) A leader hires people who are better than he is, and gives them opportunities to prove it.  A leader  does not micromanage but always relies on his team of experts both locally and internationally.

9) A leader does not try to motivate others.  Because he knows that it is neither possible nor desirable.  Ronald sticks to Mandela′s and others′ principle of leading by example i.e. he knows his peers will follow suit if he acts with a clear direction.

10) Last but not least, and perhaps more importantly, a leader creates the proper context for each person of his team, through which each one can motivate him/herself with challenges worthy of his /her pride.  Ronald applies the principle that leadership is forward- oriented towards a better future to progress and progress is the realization of the impossible as “I am possible”.  Making dreams come true is both a poetic and accurate definition of progress. Leadership is also upgrading at the right time to become a guide/guru of next generations.  To me the ongoing success of Spanish Leadership, enhanced now with American Leadership, German Leadership, British Leadership and Worldwide Incubators Leadership, is the real proof of it.

I am sure my good friend Ronald when he reads the above has to feel vindicated.  I share your satisfaction Ronald.  That is why I saved this picture back in 2013

Pulse as your first 3.0 pivotal base in the H2H era

Any research that you google out there on 3.0 will bring up a number of features.  Thus for instance you will see that some experts already disregard the semantic web as important in the 3.0 world.  But in any analysis the Internet Mobile Access through Software is in the 3.0 scenario. Pulse was indeed a popular newsreader for the web and mobile. That is why LinkedIn defeated Microsoft in the race to acquire it. Because of its utmost strategic importance.

That is why Dan Roth feels vindicated in this wonderful article We Just Crossed 1 Million Writers on Linkedin. Here’s What We’ve Learned About Why You Keep...https://lnkd.in/edrfYRW. Because Dan Roth, who is LinkedIn editor, already worked hard in 2012 with LinkedIn Influencers as you can see there in this wonderful interview with Richard Branson

Linkedin′s success with Pulse is well founded (i.e. all the worldwide leadership experts and gurús from Branson to Maxwell as well as Obama Clinton or Cameron) and structured (i.e. there is now a directory where up to 1 million contributors are listed).

There is no doubt that we are now in the H2H 3.0 era with Pulse being the ultimate, most efficient, technologically more adept, mechanism for you to lead people.

This goes far beyond merely writing a few articles like if this was an old 1.0 blog. No wonder why James Caan, in London, UK says he can′t wait for to have 3 million people reading his blogs (statement he made when he reached the 2 million threshold).  It is because he really sees the reality of a 3.0 community which reads him from any device. From any network. From any Internet access point.

But remember Stern′s point above: A leader does not try to motivate others.  Because he knows that it is neither possible nor desirable.  The principle of leading by example applied to Mandela i.e. he knows his peers will follow suit if he acts with a clear direction.

Our December 2014 article A whole new worldwide leadership via LinkedIn′s Economic Graph (I)https://lnkd.in/dfjb4-v was indeed the first piece of information.

You do need to build up your own leadership strategy. Beginning shortly we shall start to lay out for you a systematic and structured approach about how to lead in the 3.0 world making the most of out of the leadership thought concept which has consolidated itself in the 2.0 world.  Stay tuned.  You will enjoy the journey.

Lets learn from this great article

Mr Zuazola, Thank you, you are quite correct. There is a great deal more to one's career and life (if we choose) than B2C or B2C. As you correctly note, H2H (Human 2 Human) is a really good reminder for a more productive, profitable and satisfying formula to both engage at work, home and community. Encouragingly, positive trends are emerging within mainstream academia and the more contemporary corporate models. Now, we may comfortably discuss both the benefits and practicality of- CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), Sustainability, The Circular Economy and Authentic Leadership. Regards, Adrian
