Leadership Awareness: Unpacking the Three Essential Aspects of Your Leadership Style

I have just completed another two-day leadership training program with an amazing group of beautiful hoomanz. I am lucky to get to do what I love, and to be able to impart some knowledge, and impact some hearts and minds.

What is really amazing though is when I ask the attendees to delve into reflection about their leadership and their leadership styles. There are so many great conversations, great learnings, and great moments.

Because leadership isn't solely about directing others; it's about self-awareness and comprehension of how our approaches shape the environment around us. Let's explore three fundamental aspects for you to reflect on, and to unpack in relation to your unique leadership style:

Self-Reflection: The Foundation of Effective Leadership

Taking the time for reflection (post event) and introspection (during event) is indispensable for any leader. Reflecting on your values, strengths, weaknesses, and experiences is crucial in understanding your leadership style.

Ask yourself: What drives my decisions? How do I handle challenges? What impact do my actions have on my team? Self-reflection serves as a compass guiding your leadership journey, aiding in identifying areas for improvement and leveraging your strengths.

Communication: The Key to Influential Leadership

Effective communication is the cornerstone of successful leadership. How you convey ideas, provide feedback, and listen profoundly shapes your team dynamics. Understanding your communication style—be it assertive, empathetic, or visionary—empowers you to adapt and connect with diverse personalities. Whether it's through active listening, clear instructions, or inspirational speeches, honing your communication style amplifies your leadership influence.

Ask yourself: What are my communication strengths, and what sort of communicator do I want to be known as?

Adaptability: Embracing Flexibility in Leadership

The ability to adapt is indispensable in today's dynamic work landscape. Leaders must navigate uncertainties, pivot strategies, and embrace change seamlessly. Recognising your flexibility quotient enables you to assess your response to change. Are you open-minded? Can you pivot swiftly? Embracing adaptability not only fosters resilience but also inspires confidence in your team amid challenging situations.

Ask yourself: How flexible am I? How adaptable to change am I? And how flexible do? I want to be, and how can I get there?

Understanding your leadership style is an ongoing journey, not a destination. It evolves with experience, feedback, and continuous learning. Embrace opportunities for growth, seek feedback from peers and mentors, and stay open to refining your leadership approach.

As a leader at any level of an organisation, I encourage each of you to embark on your introspective journey, exploring and honing your leadership style. Remember, effective leadership isn't about a one-size-fits-all approach; it's about leveraging your uniqueness to inspire and empower those around you.
