Leadership in Action: 5 Moves to Make This Week

Do you have a deliberate, focused, and reasonable schedule of 15 -20 minutes a day of leadership activities set up for the week? You should. Here are five ideas.

1. Write a short but well-crafted email stating what you will concentrate on this week and asking the team for ideas on achieving it.

2. Schedule time, starting with your superstars, for one-on-one check-in. This check-in is a valuable opportunity to gauge alignment, exchange ideas, and provide and receive feedback. 3. Push away from the desk or screen and "walk around." Walking around may mean picking up the phone. Check-in, be professionally curious, and ask a few good questions. Can I help in your work? Do you have the tools and information to be successful? Would you like more or less feedback and coaching from me? What is wasting your time and efforts right now? You get a chance to practice active listening and gain a wealth of knowledge about how things are going on in your teams.

4. Make the call you have been putting off.

5. Find people doing something right and use it as a coaching tool. This is a powerful way to recognize and reinforce positive behaviors. I can send you a guide explaining the process and its effectiveness.

Any of these will allow you to dive deeper into the team's work and thinking, make you a more visible and connected leader, and give you a break from pushing paper.
