Leadership 201 - Resilient Leadership

I was listening to an update on the Ukraine Russia war recently.?Both sides have faced challenges and suffered losses.?All I could do was empathize. These citizens have developed high levels of resilience during the past 18 months - daily attacks by ground forces and missiles, and the recent flooding caused by the collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro River, due to a suspected bombing.

For many years South Africans have also faced numerous challenges.?These include social and economic inequalities, political unrest and the lack of electricity through pervasive load-shedding which has had an impact on many lives and economic growth. The resilience and leadership demonstrated by our citizens has been instrumental in steering the country towards progress. Has there been enough progress?

There is a dynamic relationship between resilience and leadership.?Resilient leaders drive change, overcome challenges and foster a prosperous future.

Most people will agree that resilience is needed to navigate the complexities and uncertainties of a rapidly changing world. In South Africa, resilience is deeply rooted in the historical struggle against apartheid and the subsequent transition to democracy.?Almost three decades into a democratic government the resilience of citizens has been tested on so many fronts.

In 2024 the next set of elected leaders will have to set up the right trajectory for growth and development in South Africa.?The people are ready. Are the leaders?

Resilient leaders play a pivotal role in harnessing the power of the resilient citizens and need to use that energy to bring about meaningful change. In South Africa we have seen leaders emerge from various spheres, including politics, business, and civil society. These leaders have the ability to inspire, unite, and mobilize individuals towards a common goal. The needs of the people must be prioritised while building equitable and sustainable solutions.

South Africa has witnessed the rise of numerous resilient leaders.?Each of them has left an indelible mark on the nation's history.?Characteristics such as empathy, integrity, and adaptability?and resilience have helped these leaders actively engage with communities, encourage dialogue, and promote an inclusive society - all critical to growth!?Once again not enough resilient leaders have stepped up to the mark.?

Tough times build resilience; however, this is not the only factor.?The country and its citizens need to invest in education, mentorship, and leadership-development programs.?More inclusive programmes are required for the youth, which will contribute to a sustainable and prosperous future.

Resilience and leadership are intricately intertwined in any country’s journey towards progress and prosperity. Leaders need to embrace resilience, not fight it.?Let us learn from the tough times to navigate the challenges, inspire positive change, and build communities and countries that are sustainable and continue to grow.
