Leaders: Are you running the race for talent with the wrong shoes?

Leaders: Are you running the race for talent with the wrong shoes?

Last Wednesday, the sun was shining, and I had about 25 minutes until my next phone interview began. It was an hour after lunch, and I was starting to get a bit sleepy. It was a perfect time for a reboot before the second half of the day interviewing leaders for my clients to hire. So, I pulled up my google maps to seek the nearest track to take a quick run.

I found one and hopped out, ready to get my wiggles out.

I opened my trunk, where I kept my gym bag, to snag a quick change for the right clothing. Much to my dismay, my shoes must not have made the trek to my car. I pouted a bit in my head and then decided to give it a go anyway in my work shoes. Bad idea!

About halfway through the first lap, things hurt. I stopped just as my heart started to get pounding. I looked down and let out a frustrated giggle, and then just embraced a slower pace instead of a run.

As I did so, I contemplated how relevant the experience was to so many of my clients who were calling me complaining about their inability to find talent for their leadership roles.

This type of complaint is nothing new amidst our decades in recruiting, but the tone was different amidst COVID. As I pondered what has changed in winning the race to talent (beyond the obvious), I can sum it up in two words: “Almost everything.”

For years, we have been diligent in staying ahead of labor changes for our clients. Being one step ahead of the changes is essential to position your employment brand beyond your competition; however, in this season, to win the race for talent, staying one step ahead requires completely new shoes.

If you expect to win the race for talent amidst the many changes in the labor market, you can not do it without new foundations. You can’t run this race in your old shoes. Adapting to the significant changes in the way Americans view work post-COVID is no easy task.

You will need to walk before you run in the race for top talent!

We want to help equip you with the right shoes. Join us as we detail the new labor market and how to win the race for top talent on November 11 over lunch for a 45-minute deep dive into the changes.

Let’s put on the right shoes and become the top employers who will attract talent and win the race!
