The leaders we need today

This week organisations, nations and individuals have come together to support the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
In 2015, the countries of the United Nations made a universal promise to leave no one behind in achieving a peaceful and prosperous world by 2030.
Sadly progress has slid backwards over the last couple of years. But as it becomes clearer to most people that we must be #sustainable and must find ways to stay within the planet's boundaries - the message of the #globalgoals is being recognised - this is actually our Global to-do list and we must all do our bit.
From alleviating #poverty in London to ensuring #equity in the #food #valuechain dominated by the powerful supermarket retailers, every village, town, city, county, province and country is affected by the #globalchallenges.
Top-down approaches don't work, but working collectively does. We need to collaborate and create diverse partnerships to figure a way out of this calamity - for society, the environment and for the economy.
Society is increasingly looking to businesses to embrace responsibility beyond the limits of their operations - creating value socially, environmentally and economically. But to do this, we need new ways to view leadership and to move away from business as usual dressed up as sustainable.
Having a 'purpose' is great, but everyone has a purpose. And too often, it is used as a marketing ploy that exacerbates distrust in science and causes unnecessary division and diversion from the issues we face.
Rather, we need transformation change, and that comes from people who can shape, not just adapt to the future. The leaders we need now are the ones who understand how to advocate for change at the level of whole systems, and who work to build collective capacity or #collectiveleadership - ensuring leadership is not simply seen as led by a heroic few.
There will be tensions and drama to balance long-term goals with short-term results, but what behaviours are we really teaching our children and grandchildren to value if we don't?
#Remember they will be the ones looking after the pension pots in years to come!
