A Leader's North Star

A Leader's North Star

In a pivotal scene when soccer phenom Dani Rojas loses his swagger after a traumatic injury, the empathetic wisdom of coach Ted Lasso shines through. As Dani withdraws from team camaraderie visibly shaken, Lasso draws him aside not to admonish his poor play but to listen and understand.?

“Seems to me like you're going through a tough time there, bud” Lasso gently reflects. He resists critique, instead nodding in support as Dani opens up about lost confidence and fear plaguing him. Lasso responds not with tactics but care: “Thank you for telling me that, I appreciate you letting me in.” He promises faith seeing Dani’s talents undimmed by temporary struggles.

This moment crystallizes Lasso’s groundbreaking approach - people first, performance second. He realizes that for many, Dani’s star potential could breed resentment when dimmed. It’s human nature to kick others while they are down out of jealousy or frustration. Yet Lasso suspends any verdict, extending grace and trusting the personal growth process.?

And such non-judgmental leadership proves visionary. In due time, Dani rediscovers his inner magic to rise again with encouragement, not criticism. Had Lasso piled on blame as others may when his star stumbled, that rebirth may never have arrived. Yet patently avoiding assumptions about attitudes or shaming vulnerability fostered space for Dani to heal on his own terms.??

So often in life the natural instinct is to critique those seemingly losing their way - whether employees missing sales targets, colleagues struggling with workload or even friends making messy relational choices. Yet Lasso compels us to pause judgment. To lead with compassion over condemnation. And to trust in human resilience once supported. For when given latitude to process difficulties without pressure, more often than not people regain their inner fire to turn the corner wiser and stronger.??

Much as the cliche goes - before criticizing others, walk a mile in their shoes first. Lasso exemplifies reserving commentary for context and leaning into care instead. For in people’s lowest moments lies seeds of their own revival; our role is faithfully nurturing those seeds to bloom, vines can’t be forced to flower only tended gently. And thanks to leaders like Lasso illuminating the path, each of has permission now to craft cultures centered on understanding first, impact second across all realms of life.

Yes, empathy is key. As a leader I thrive on building a trusting culture where everyone’s ideas are valued. Listen to your team, what is really going on with them, personally or professionally. Is there a way you can support them, get past pain or misunderstanding? Growth mindset. Be watchful of people in power who think they have the answers but their track record is actually not one of succcess.
