Leaders need to be intellectually honest with themselves.

As the world continues to evolve and cultures become increasingly interconnected, the importance of effective leadership has never been greater. For Millennials—who often drive this transformation with their energy, open-mindedness, and a strong sense of purpose—leading through challenging times requires an honest look at where we're headed; that means being intellectually honest with ourselves as leaders. This can be difficult work as it necessitates a degree of humility and self-reflection that many of us may not have been accustomed to in the past. However, if done right, being intellectually honest will help us create sustainable solutions for our organizations to thrive in today's ever-changing environment. In this blog post, I'll explore how Millennial leaders specifically can approach intellectual honesty to deliver genuine success both now and in the future.

Understand Your Limitations:?Leaders must know their strengths and weaknesses and use this knowledge to make decisions.

Leading is no small feat, especially when charting a path forward while understanding one's limitations. One key trait that separates successful leaders from the pack is their self-awareness, the ability to identify personal strengths and weaknesses, and use this knowledge to make important decisions. This kind of insight helps guide leaders away from trouble areas while allowing them to focus on areas they are good at to drive business success. In addition, creating an accurate profile of your capability will help avoid costly missteps and maximize the efficiency of your team's efforts. As a leader, a strong understanding of yourself can have exponential returns regarding better decision-making, improved organization relationships, and an accelerated road to success.

Embrace Diversity of Thought:?Encourage diverse perspectives to gain new insights into problem-solving.

If you want to stay competitive in an ever-changing world, embracing a diversity of thought is essential. Suppose all your team employees think the same way and never question or push back against your ideas and opinions. In that case, you have a problem – stale ideas and a lack of creativity can be disastrous for any business or organization. Having diverse perspectives forces us to consider new angles and approach problems differently, which is vital for innovation and fresh solutions. It's time to embrace diverse perspectives to remain competitive in this rapidly-changing environment.

Admit When You're Wrong - Not every decision will be a winner; leaders must own up to mistakes and take ownership of the consequences.

Admitting when you're wrong is one of the many important qualities a leader must possess. It demonstrates to their team that they can be trusted, which increases morale and fosters collaboration. Leaders who know how to take responsibility for mistakes also show their employees that it's a safe place to take risks, experiment and learn from failure. However, admitting mistakes fosters trust and prepares leaders for future challenges by helping them refine their leadership skills. They develop better judgment and become more competent decision-makers through the experience of fixing errors on their own accord. Understanding the importance of owning up to mistakes makes it easier to make better decisions in the future.

Bet On Yourself:?Have confidence in your intuition and trust that you'll make the right decision for the organization's long-term success.

Betting on yourself means showing confidence in your decision-making and trusting that you will always seek the organization's best interests. It's essential to take risks, have faith in your knowledge and experience, and always maintain sight of the bigger picture regarding long-term success. It can also help to seek advice from other experienced professionals and peers; they may see opportunities or warning signs that would otherwise go unnoticed. By taking a proactive and informed approach, betting on yourself can significantly increase your chances of making the right decisions for an organization's long-term goals.

Let Go of Perfectionism - Aim for progress, not perfection, so that you can move on quickly from mistakes and focus on progress instead.

Perfectionism often stifles creativity and leads to procrastination. It's important to remember that it's ok to make mistakes; no one does everything perfectly. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on progress. By expecting only slow, incremental improvements, you will find it easier to move on quickly from mistakes and avoid self-criticism when things don't go according to plan. Reminding yourself that all you need is just good enough can help you break free from the shackles of perfectionism and make better use of your time and energy towards achieving improved outcomes instead of striving for perfection at all times.

Prioritize Self-Care - Balance work with rest to ensure clarity of thought when making tough decisions.

Everyone deals with situations from time to time that require difficult decisions to be made. Successful outcomes often depend on clarity and concentration when evaluating options and circumstances. It is essential to ensure your body takes care of itself by prioritizing self-care in your routine. That can mean balancing hard work with relaxation, such as walking after lunch or setting aside time each evening to do something you enjoy. Maintaining good physical health, proper nutrition, and exercise keeps our brains functioning at their peak performance, helping us make the right choices when it matters most.

Ultimately, leading can be challenging. It requires a lot of hard work, dedication, and risk-taking. Taking risks is especially important as leaders need to make decisions that may not always be popular but benefit the organization in the long run. As leaders, we must understand our limitations, challenge ourselves to grow, and understand alternative perspectives and opinions for problem-solving. It's also important to not let perfectionism stand in the way of progress or let ourselves grow weary—we must prioritize self-care and believe in ourselves that we will make the right decisions. Let us remember these points when navigating through the road of leadership together. Then, with optimism and determination, we can make it past any obstacle that comes our way!

Awesome article and thanks for sharing. Some great points there that I also use to teach prospective leaders WHAT leadership is about, self awareness being key just as diversity of thought is ...

Lorenzo, Another great read, thanks! Quick question on the word weakness. “Leaders must know their strengths and weaknesses” Are we moving away from using the word opportunities rather than the negative connotation of weakness? Cheers
